Found these at an estate sale and couldn't pass them up. Can't find much on them except that they need a clip kit to run them and I have no idea what that is, can anyone help with this? Thanks Jeff

LWE speakers.....here's a link i found: http://lweloudspeakers.com/index.html i guess you can still contact him and ask. looks like they used different drivers for their speaker designs.
according to the numbers written on the back of that woofer, they're CTS woofers. i've seen them a few times in guitar amps and they are decent drivers as far as i know.

If you can find the associated connectors and the amp the crossovers were designed for, these speakers will rock your world! Louis knew how to use the negative feedback in SS amps to buttress the low end, to the point where I have heard a pair of his 70 lb speakers come within spitting distance of a set of KHorns.

Without the crossovers/speaker hookups and the modded amp, his speakers are average. Talk to him and see what you can do. It is well worth spending a couple hundred bucks if you have the money. Properly set up, LWEs produce stunning articulate bass response out of medium speakers.

Ho ho hold the presses boys. That a find! Are those 15"s? Dang. I have the Model 1A which is a 3-way with a single 15". It rocks.

There are at least 2 of us LWE owners on AK, and there is also a Yahoo discussion group with lots of downloadable documentation.

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/lweusersgroup/

Suggest you join this group if you're interested in getting these up and running. These guys are working out hookups for the feedback circuit for additional amps and receivers that they do not exist for. Because of the design, they don't sound like much if you dont' use the feedback circuit. And of course it has to be wired into the amp in just the right spot. Which was the problem with marketing the system. The bass, however, is awesome.

And if you decide it's more than you want to tackle, I'll take that junque off your hands!

Mr. Erath is still going and still designing speakers. He's about 90 now. There's an email address on his web site but don't expect a swift response. He doesn't do much email. Great guy though.

Man, I can't believe you found those.

Sent Mr Erath an email asked for information, will see what he has to say. Hope I can get what I need to get these to sing.

BTW I think the LWE Users Group has posted the manuals with hookup info for the receivers/amps from the production era (around 1970). And they have added new ones for more modern gear. Maybe you already have one of the receivers or amps that has been "solved". I'm trying to get a Sansui AU-517 going, but don't have the skills or the test gear to do much, so I'm depending on that group quite a bit for help.

I joined the Yahoo group and waiting for a reply. I have a KA 7100 that I would like to drive them with. Do you think it would be a good fit?

I don't know much about that unit, but basically, you want something with power output in the range of the speaker's capabilities (not too small, not too big), a beefy power supply, and an appropriate amount of feedback capability, (I know little about circuitry in this respect, those guys will). At least that's what I get out of it. I picked the Sansui because it was a black face integrated with a heavy power supply, right wattage, and Louis Erath said he thought it would work, circuit-wise.

What's the power rating on those II's? I'm guessing 100 wpc range?

Yep....those are LWE II's. Looks like they have been modified. The stock cabinets came with an EV tweeter horn and one hole patched so you could move the mids/tweeters for either vertical or horizontal cabinet placement. The stock LWE II's are in the lower middle of the attached pic. The outer speakers in the pic are LWE IV's and the upper middle are LWE Folkspeakers to complete my arsenal. You can run them in a conventional manner without the feedback loop. Just use the two far left terminals shown in the other pic. If you look closely, they are a liitle farther apart from the two middle terminals than the two right terminals. I have run them in a conventional manner for over 25 years and they sound great, especially with a big McIntosh amp. The Yahoo site previously mentioned is a great resource.
Great find and good luck.............

Lewtex, what are the two bottom switches on the back? The upper row is Room Gain (which is the feedback level), MF and HF level controls. What are the other ones?

Toxcrusadr,

The bottom left is phase control, bottom right is impedance selector. Neither of these are marked, but I wondered the same thing and got an answer on the Yahoo site. I noticed the pair jmoliff purchased does not have these two switches on the back. There is a pic of the back panel of some other LWE II's on the Yahoo site, and these have the two extra switches. Hmmmmmm.....

I know this is an old thread...Unkowingly,I bought a pair of LWE cabs for the drivers(3 KLIPSCH K33 and an ALTEC 421A).I was about to pitch the boxes when I discovered what they are. Holes for 2X15's and 4 6" holes down one vertical side . They're a bit rough but still have nice grille cloths and they're solid. If anyone would like them,I'll gladly give them to you.I'm in the Seattle area. Keep the faith, whiteythedrummer
