Adding a Subwoofer to Analog set-up.

Yamaha receiver speaker terminals (aka speaker OUT) go the the subwoofer's speaker-level IN.

Use either the A or B terminals.

Wire your main speakers to either:
  • the SPEAKER OUT connections of the subwoofer, or
  • whichever of the terminals on your Yamaha that you did not use for the subwoofer.
Hell, you can just put the sub and the main speakers on A together (or B together)
 
The subwoofer will not be affected by the use of the Pure Direct function.

Now just so I can wrap my ignorant mind around this fully, what I am comprehending, is that I would connected my speaker wire from Channel A L+R on the Yamaha Natural sound receiver into the "Hi Level Input" L and R on the Subwoofer and then the other set of speaker wires from the "Hi level OUTput" connection on the Subwoofer into the actual speakers?

Am I right or am I still ignorant?

Okay so my Natural Sound receiver is about 80 watts per Channel, the Subwoofer I am considering is 250 watts, is this a compatible pairing?

My RECEIVER is 80 watts per channel, my speakers are 150 peak watts each and the Subwoofer I am interested in is 250 watts
 
I have a Yamaha RX-V1800 AVR with Pure Direct.

If the source is analog connected, Pure Direct means that the analog path is preserved thru the unit and you will not get any subwoofer output.

When I had my TT and CD player analog connected to it, in Pure Direct, no sound came from the subwoofer because the unit doesn't do an A/D conversion to synthesize a subwoofer signal to output.

Some receivers may do this in the analog domain, but not my unit.

I have always found diagrams to help visualize a method of equipment attachment, here is your considered option for adding a sub to your system (from my Yamaha YST-SW300 manual). Note that this method is as you noted, using speaker outputs from your receiver into a sub that is equipped for this method. Note that this method is often recommended for many people in that it allows the sub to control the crossover between the sub and woofers on your mains. Some active subs have a preset crossover, some have a limited number of selectable levels, and some more of an almost infinite number of levels.

I have two SPL meters that I can use to help me dial in my system, a trusty old Radio Shack meter I have had for decades, and also a more recently acquired iPhone app called "Decibel Sound Meter".

I'm pretty sure that if you had your subwoofer connected via speaker level connections, its output would not be affected by the Pure Direct function.

No matter what is going on inside the unit, output from the speaker terminals is in the form of an analog signal. I would guess you are using the subwoofer output (line level/LFE) from your receiver.

Speaker level or line level, the low pass crossover in the sub is controlled from the sub.

For the OP; its purpose is to control the frequency at which the sub "stops" (rolls off). For example, if your mains do a good job down to 60Hz, you would probably set the low pass crossover around there. This would keep the subwoofer from reproducing the frequencies which can be adequately handled by the main speakers.

Note that some subwoofers - although not many, and certainly not many in the "budget priced" category - also have a built-in high pass crossover, by which you can keep your main speakers from trying to go below a specified frequency...thereby keeping them from struggling to reproduce the lowest frequencies, and reducing overlap between the frequencies handled by the sub vs those handled by the main speakers.
