I have a line on a pair of ADS 910/2 speakers with stands for $450. They are around 9/10 cosmetically, grills are very good with badges intact. All the drivers seem to be working (paper towel tube test) and they have this funky LED panel on the crossover module. I know how much I enjoy my L1090/2's and was wondering how these might compare. We weren't able to run the volume up too high due to the guy's mother sleeping upstairs. How finicky are these beasts to placement and how power hungry are they? Would my B&K ST140M monoblocks be adequate?

I have a pair that I got about a year ago. I really like them. I do not know about comparing them to L1090/2's since I have not heard those. My 910's are out of commission because there seems to be a loose wire to one of the tweeters; it works intermittently. I have them connected to a Luxman MX-100 and I think they sound very good with it. Before the Luxman they were connected to a small receiver and they sound much better with the power of the Luxman. What is the output of your amps? Sorry, not much help. Mine do not have the lights, I wish they did.
 
The B&K amps are ~140w each into 8 ohms. I didn't even check the impedance of the speakers so I'm just assuming they're 8 ohms. I think the B&K's push ~205w into 4 ohms.

That's a very good price since you say the cosmetics are good and include the stands and the output meter. Can't say I have ever heard a set of L1090's.
 
That amp should be plenty for them. I can't remember off hand if they are 4 or 6 ohm's but I know for sure that they aren't 8 ohm speakers. I'd have to try to find my manual. Maybe someone else here knows.
 
Wish I had the manual. I have been trying to get it from the guy who runs the estate sale but he is not helpful. Anyway, Dennydog what are you using to power your 910's?
 
My concerns with these are:
  • The amount of real estate they take. They were much bigger than I expected.
  • Room placement. Just how sensitive are they to walls, corners, etc.
  • Replacement parts.
  • Those funky LED panels. Just how annoying would these things be in a darkened room? Are they easily disabled?

I have two pairs of L910s as well as a pair of L1230s. The 910s IMO are the better speaker, better low end with the dual 10 inch woofer as opposed to the dual 8 inch woofers in the 1230s. I don't have the LEDs, but have heard that they're really only for show and in fact can add a bit of distortion. I talked with Richard So, the ADS guru, and he suggests disconnecting the LEDs.
 
I run ADS L-910s with a pair of Manley Mahi monoblocks 20 wpc in triode and 40 wpc in UL and I run in triode. ADS L-910s are very efficient and the Manleys have NO trouble driving them, and they sound fabulous...no LEDs in my crossovers :no: and I don't miss 'em. They are NOT finicky with placement. Richard So takes care of my speakers :D
 
Besides size take into account that they weight about 100 Lbs. each, so bring a friend when you get them. Since a year ago when I bought mine, I have been keeping an eye on prices and I have seen them selling anywhere between $300 -600.
 
Thanks guys, am talking to the business manager and decorator now. These will require a "minor" tweak in the main listening room due to their width. I need approval to any adjustments of the current arrangement. It's like being married to Martha Stewart. I was really hoping this might get easier when I turned 50 a couple of years ago. I'm still waiting at 52.

I've used mine with both my Pioneer SX-1250 and my Elite M-90. I think they sound great powering them with either.

Some people don't like the look of the stands but I think they are a beautiful looking and sounding speaker. Classy looks that will never go out of style.

I love the solid wood cabinets, not to mention how great they sound. Think we talked the OP into buying them yet? :)
