ADS-910's

I'm a firm believer that we stand on the shoulder of giants that came before us, and I'm risk averse, value the experience, and opinions of others who have been there and done that.

I've taken the knowledge and advise stored within these webpages and bought my gear. I'm extremely happy with my gear, which includes the ADS 910 and other ADS models. ADS has "it", like Kevin Costner or Julia Roberts got "it". There is something magical, to my ears, emanating from these speakers. I don't try to over analyze "it". I just enjoy "it".

Congratulations, Brian ( @bharry). You are right.Glen and others are very helpful guides, indeed!

I've read this for the third time foo, and just had to comment how nicely put it is. I appreciated your start as we are the giants for tomorrows searchers. May we give them some if our knowledge to inspire and encourage them, as we are now. What a great thread this is for more reasons then just the 910's.

If anyone is interested, I find the new Goldenear speakers to be very ADS-like. Very good sensitiviy, a bit better resolution, and very smooth and natural like the 910's. With the price of 910's rising they might a good option on the used market.

Sorry for the long delay posting a photo of my 910s. I’ve been trying them out with my different gear, tonight I’m streaming Amazon HD through my Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-11 into my Luxman R-117 then out to my ADS 910. The stands I found at a yard sale for $10. They are extremely sturdy and well built and I think they match the speakers perfectly.

Outstanding. Yes those stands really do complement the 910's. Congratulations for putting that all together. Looks awesome, and have no doubt what so ever they sound fabulous. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent! Looks great, and I can guess, they sound great!
What's some of the music you've been testing them with?
Glenn

Those stands look good with the speakers.

@bharry, Brian that is a fine looking stack of electronics. What is that:
R-117
MAC-4100
T-12
L-10
AU-555a?

Can you put you thoughts about sound of the different pieces in a thread for us to enjoy? Maybe likes and dislikes of them, too, operation, features and such? Be a good read as there are some well respected chunks of gear there.

I have decided that even though I absolutely love these speakers they are just too big for my space. I wish I could make them work but I can't so I've decided to move them. They look fine in the picture I posted but if you saw the room you would understand what I am up against. I picked up a pair of Snell E/II that I really like the sound of and they fit so much better.

Sorry to hear you are letting your 910's go. Hopefully, an AK'er will pick them up.

Recently, a few posts back I decided to sell my 910's locally on Craigslist.

I set my 910's aside several months, before eventually deciding to sell them. During those months I was testing various ADS speaker models I purchased on Craigslist. I spent so much time testing the new-to-me speakers, I forgot how good the 910's are. I listed them on CL, and before anyone replied to my ad, I hooked them up. My wife, who honestly is less than passionate about my obsession with ADS, chimed in and said these sound better than the ones you really like (L1590's). She was right. I forgot how good the 910's sound. To be fair to the L1590's, they were not updated by Richard So.

Quickly, I removed my ad, and prayed to the ADS gods for forgiveness.

One of the deciding selling factors, aside from forgetting how good they sound, is their size. Seriously, restoring the 910's cabinets exacerbated issues related to my shoulders. Lifting and moving these titans is a Herculean task!

Best of luck, and enjoy your Snells.

Speakers this size require help when lifting them unless your a twenty-thirty something. The stuff I use to lift when I was younger, now, nah, not worth possible injury. My good friend AKer Supercool recently bought a set and using a hand truck pulled them up a flight of stairs, and now his back is paying the price! I told him to wait for help, but understand his anxiousness to get them inside to start working on them.
I will say, off their stands, on carpet, they can be slid around pretty easily, and layed on their backs, can be blocked up off the rug to work on them.
They are amazing speakers. Anyway, good to hear you kept these beasts.

Thanks Goggle1824, you are correct and I appreciate your thoughts. The shippers really are very professional. They are full service, with insurance premiums as well. The quote was just an initial quote based off nothing more then the size and weight with no frills for packing (although, I'm absolutely sure even with bubble wrap and peanuts, it would have been more then just throwing them in a cardboard box and shipping them out the door). They offer custom made cardboard box, corner boards and secure packaging. The quote was the starting point and goes up from there. It was all I was asking for, for a start to get an idea how much it was going to cost to ship them. Starting at $395 x2 the cost for shipping plus the cost of the speakers would end up being more then what my wife could recover after I leave this earthly plane. It would be cheaper for me to drive out there WHICH almost happened ... until life caught up with me.

Yep, I would have insisted in nothing less had I had them shipped, however ... as I said above, life caught up with me.

It appears, that the seller is no longer listing them heh .... shaking my head, then all of a sudden, I see a pair of 910's on the bay from ..... Tucson ... for 2 and a half times more then the seller was asking. Looks like either the seller could be selling them on consignment or flipping them? Good luck to him (heartfelt honesty), but too rich for my blood.

Because of all the knowledgeable AKers, I became educated based on their experiences, and general info regarding overall positive and negative commentary. The personal experiences are the most compelling for my decision making and searches.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll check them before I heat up the soldering iron!
There been several pair of 910's here in the Seattle area. Craigslist and Offerup. I had to move from the eighteen hundred square ft. house i rented for eighteen years. Sold almost everything in the last year. Kept my ads L-570's i bought in 1985, mint condition. And a pair of L-780 2's for my 500 square ft. apt. It's all good. Obviously not like before, but i hadn't heard the 570's in awhile and they sound great with the Denon dra-700 reciever i bought them with in 1985. Just wanted to say hi Glenn, it's been awhile. I hope not to have messed up this thread, but someone will let me know if i did. Cheers, Will D.

Hi Will!
Good to see you’re adjusting to your new digs. Must be tough, but you’re making the best of it! Many don’t have a single set of ADSs, so you’re sitting pretty!
Cheers, Glenn

Nope, can't mess up this thread. It goes everywhere ADS. I go everywhere with ads as that is the speaker systems in the car. Glad you still have some fine examples of these speakers. They are well built and will last a few lifetimes. Cheers.

I pulled the woofer, and the tinsel lead had broken at the terminal. I did a repair with a few strands of speaker wire, made a little extension and good to go!
It was recommended to use correct tinsel wire for the repair, so I ordered some from Midwest Speakers. Two sizes as I had no idea what size was originally used, .044 matched.
The wire came, and I redid the repair. Went quickly, and all is good.
Here's some pics of the two repairs for posterity.
