ADS 980 on CT CL

Good deal, especially if they are Walnut and not black. These and the L1590 Series II shared a special version of the infamous a/d/s/ dome tweeter. Short of the L2030, the largest woofer in an a/d/s/ speaker as well.

My L980's are not going anywhere soon.

IMHO, probably too much $$$ for most here. Sometimes it appears to me that many would rather have 10 pair of not-so-good speakers cluttering up the house that add up to $500 spent than one good pair of $500 speakers and room for them. :D

I have no affiliation to the seller, and no interest other than passing on my experiences with these excellent speakers.

Thanks for sharing. I do have gazillion pairs myself but have to agree with you. I could have gotten a pretty high end pair for all the money I spent on the many pairs I have. However, hunting and meeting all these new people when buying stuff off CL is fun.
I have only ADS 570 and they do sound pretty nice.

OK, I ended up with these. They are walnut, came with 2 brand new additional woofers in boxes, and the optional stands which can be tilted and can be turned around and height adjustable. The gentleman selling them was just amazing. I spent about 1 hout listening to all sorts of music supplied by a wonderful McIntosh gear...what an experience. Just meeting people like this is worth the money. The fantastic speakers are just a bonus...

Heh heh heh!

Actually I paid less than $500...and the guy was incredible. If I wanted to I could still be sitting there listening to music. He had a nice Rega p-3 too with some nice Ortofon cart.
I had so much fun there that I had difficult time leaving.

Good for you! These speakers are quite music-friendly. Enough resolution to hear into a recording...and not so much as to make you want to lift the stylus on a bad recording.....a very good balance.

The problem with resolution is as you get more, you are less likely to want to listen to less than stellar recordings, as the downside of high-res in a speaker is it will also show all the warts and lumps in the recording. As I have grown older I have found I value components that allow me to enjoy MORE of the music I like, not less.

Sancho, I hope you enjoy the L-980's as much as I enjoy mine.

Best,

Paul

I am amazed how good these sound. I really did not want to get one more pair, but even my wife who looked at me funny first (but helped carry them in gladly), admitted that they sound nice. They beat many other speakers easily and work well with jazz, various acoustic recordings, rock, etc. I am really becoming an ADS fan.

Wish he was closer. How do those compare to the L1230's? I used to have as set and really liked them, great imaging and mids. Not exactly a crankem up, rock out speaker though.

These look very similar to mine. The seller has some new Mac stuff and some newer pair of wonderful speakers which I am not familiar - not PSB but some similar 3 letter acronym. Those fit better in his room - and perhaps matching his new gear better???

I haven't heard the 980's, but I do own a pair of 710's, and yes, inferior recordings do sound worse, and great ones truly sound great, but in that sense, you have to take the good with the bad. My first pair of ADS speakers were a set of L400 bookshelf speakers that I picked up from a thrift store for 2 bucks. I just bought them on the premise that they were ADS-having never heard a pair before I called my dad to see if they were any good. I was told to buy them and that they have great imaging. I never actually used them

They ended up with my dad and he traded me for his Pioneer CT-F1250 (not working at the time). I have heard many speaker companies (Klipsch, Magnepan, Definitive, the list goes on) and some I have liked, some I have not. The best part about ADS is that the build quality is outstanding, and it was about quality, not quantity with this company....pity they aren't around anymore. I hope that you enjoy them-if treated right, you should have them for many years to come!
