ADS L 1090 a Steal in MN

That's a good price but I wouldn't call it a steal. I haven't paid that much for L1290s. But they're wonderful speakers and probably worth the asking price if all drivers work.

This--it isn't THAT great of a deal.
Like the poster above, I've had two sets of 1290s I didn't pay that much for. However those ADS tower models seem to be on the rise.
 
Just because y'all got an insane deal on your 1290's, doesn't mean we all can! I'd call this a real fair price for most of us. Not a steal, but very fair!
 
$375 is a fair deal when you consider paying fees, preparing them for shipment, etc.

It is a lot of speaker for $375. Get a sub coupled with them and you will be amazed.
 
Someone always chimes in with their garage sale finds, but $375 is a fair price for those, especially considering the condition. I love the grill treatment on that series.

Well if it's such a good deal then why are they still there 9 days after being listed:scratch2: And especially at this time of the year with income tax checks arriving.
 
Don't know if this means anything but there is a lot of ADS speakers in the Twin Cities. Audio King was one of the nations top ADS dealers for many years and we sold a ton of them. That is a pretty high price for that market.
 
Lol! Okay, not a deal but it is a real fair price IMO. I paid a little more for my 1090's and they aren't going anywhere. They are amazing sounding speakers. I see Klipsch Heresy's go for 600.00 these days.

It's a matter of taste. In 1985 I was finally making enough money to buy a great set of speakers. I had RtR 180D's/Yamaha CA 1010/Dual 1229 with an AT 15Sa cartridge in the house. I had ADS 300's in the car with a Proton front end and a Carver car amp. I went to every high end store in the Baltimore Washington area to listen to every speaker brand/model out there. I was a pain in the ass because I took my ADS 300's out of the car and asked to set them up in the listening rooms next to everything else. It gave me a reference point/base line (How is the bass/mid/treble/cymbals/drums/voices/etc)

ADS just kept beating everything (to my ears). Eventually the decision was ADS 1290's or 1590's. The 1590's cost $2200. 1290's cost $1400. 1090's cost $1100. I chose the 1590s (no contest to my ears) and decide to get a cheap commuter car instead of a classier car.

In order to give the 1090's the kind of bass that the 1590's can deliver, you need a sub (my opinion).

ADS bass response:

1590- flat to 28Hx
1290- pretty flat to 40Hz
1090-flat to 45hz??????
HT12PS (ads powered subwoofer) 15Hz!!! (I own one of these)

The 1290's and the 1590s each won the NYT grand Prix awards at that time.
Mike Kelly (Aerial Acoustics) designed them. They still sound great.

Best characteristic of all ADS speakers was LOW LISTENER FATIGUE (my opinion)

1090's ?? Best value-yup.
Need a sub?-Why not? Used subs are cheap.
 
I agree almost every speaker needs a sub. Hell, my first sub needed another sub, and then those two need a sub and...

BTW my 1530's put out a beautifully clean 14 Hz tone, and I still for the life of me can't figure out how.

Once the price is close to $400 mark for used, most low/mid brand speakers don't sale too soon unless it's something that costs $3k new.

Price has nothing to do with bass. Driver's and design matters.
My Sonus has MSRP of $3.5k but still needs help with a sub.

L1090 has two 7.5" drivers supposedly similar to one 10" so should have decent bass.

That may be the first time I've ever heard ADS classified as a low/mid brand speaker. They weren't $10k new but they weren't anywhere near cheap either. And those do look as close to perfect as 30 year old speakers get.
