ADS L8-10s Trash or Treasure???

How many times have you found something cool at a thrift,and spent the rest of the day just thinking about it,and where you would put it,and which receiver youll try it with first,pinching yourself,happy at your good fortune,wondering if these will be the speakers that will finally make that h/k 330 sing?I wonder if its the same for someone who finds a pair of Cornwalls,and puts them on ebay 15 minutes later.Just wondering.

I must not be made for reselling audio equipment on ebay. Although this was my first intention as I started buying and repairing used audio equipment, I seem to have a problem with the "selling it" stage. Once I get something working, I seem to build an unbreakable attachment to it. The only audio gear I have been able to part with this year has been to very close friends that I know will appreciate it as much as I do. This project never seems to get to a "profit stage". I guess that's the difference between a business and an addiction.

I have a similar problem - I just can't seem to get going to sell anything. I want try it all out for a while, use it a bit, set it up and enjoy it. So in 1 short year I've gathered up 6 extra pairs of speakers, and 3 extra receivers, 5 tuners and 4 cassette decks. I want to sell a few things, but I think I'll wait until fall when prices are supposed to get better.

As for the whole L-810 thing going on - buying for a quick resale is something many people here do and might not admit it. But posting for some quick info and then bragging about what a service you do for the 'vintage community' by saving this stuff from the landfill - give me a break. The thrift shops deserve get the credit for that. Pick it up off the curb on garbage day, and you've done us all a favour. Maybe we should all brag about what we've left behind because we know there are others out there looking for the gear just like us.

I agree with you. I may end up selling some gear for a profit (maybe if I can ever make myself let it go) but I'm enjoying the info/hobby and like AK that way.

Collectors are a very, very, very small percentage of any given community. Collectors of large, often needing repair, pieces of electronics are even smaller percentage. The chance of someone else finding that Aristocrat speaker he is currently selling in that particular thrift store, who both knew what it was AND wanted it for their personal use is tiny. The chance of it being picked up by another dealer, be it ebay or antique, is better. But if the right person does not come along relatively quickly, the thrift will throw it in the trash. I'd rather he made a few bucks and got into the hands of some person for whom a couple hundred bucks is not a big deal, who does not have the time, patitence or wherewithall to hit the thrifts regularly.

I found a pair of ADS L8-10 Speakers at the local thrift store for $24 so I took a chance and bought them. I'm only just now getting into vintage audio equipment, but these look so sweet! The cabinets are awesom and they have the metal clip-on front covers. I hooked them up today and they seem to perform great.

I know these are good speakers, but are they nice enough that I should sell them or keep them? How do they shape up to other ADS models and others by compeditors?

Really just wanting to milk the brains of people who know a lot more about this stuff than I. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am surprized this thread is still alive. I really don't have any problem with someone flipping something on ebay for a good deal and/or to make a few bucks, lord knows it's hard enough to make a living for most of us. I think the part that aggravated people was the fact that he asked for opinions on whether these were worth keeping or not in his original post when he never had any intention of keeping the speakers in the first place as he posted later. Obviously his inititial post based on his later post was a disigenuous attempt to get free information, which I guess is fine.

BTW, I would love to have a set of those speakers.

Let me cap this thread off by saying that two pair of L8-10 have sold on Ebay for $197 and $207 respectively since I sold mine. I sold mine for $199 and was given grief for it because the 'experts' thought they were worth $400. I have a nice Sony bookshelf system in my home that I love. I have no room for large vintage speakers like these. I happen to be a golfer. I find golf equipment all the time at thrift stores and many times I keep it and play with it. I even refinish clubs I find and give them to my golfing friends. I know exactly where you're coming from when it comes to a passion for your hobby. I should have saved you all the grief and never said anything about selling them for $199. Anyway, despite what anybody thinks about my motives, I'm thrilled that the world is filled with lots of interesting folks who are passionaite about their hobbies. I find it very interesting to learn from them about things I know little or nothing about. I find that in doing so I develop a different perspective and it often get's me going in a different direction. I can't tell you how many things I've purchased that I've ended up keeping. Audio is new to me, but I've already learned so much. Diversity of interest and willingness to share is what makes the world an interesting place. The internet is perhaps the first tool that allows people to search for and tap this resource. Next time I find audio equipment, you guys get first pass at it. How's that for fair. As they say: Its all good...

look at the cabinets on the other 2 pair, they were beat, yours were pristine. the "first pass" offer to AK'ers is fine as long as you make such offers through the AK classifieds.

I don't donate to SA or GW anymore and now that I hear they dump stuff I can see why. Years ago had stuff left over from a fundraiser including a Thorens TT. Took it to GW. It had a European plug on it and before I could say anything the worker launched it 20 feet into a dumpster. I donate to a Catholic thrift that seems to never toss anything. Just picked up a pair of Heaths today for $4.00. Since a recent renewed interest in vintage audio and joining this forum I have been lucky to find a number of vintage pieces at great prices. And, lucky to have found some more recent equip't-Kenwood amp, tuner, eq, dual cassette and Fisher CD. Was given to seller's son and stored. Got it all for $8.00 sold it all for $100. Why? Maybe could have made more but just wanted to money for next keeper. Enough of this new stuff around to be profitable. What do I keep? Most everything that I have asked AKers about. I have been very happy with timely replies as it takes time and effort to offer an educated answer. Appraisers that I know charge upwards of $100/hr..
My point (finally) is, if fishing for an appraisal be upfront about it. Then members can answer at leisure and not be offering congrats and getting excited. Truly, I don't think AKers mind appraising but as dingus stated give them first choice for their time and effort. If not then spend your own time web surfing.

I agree that the L8-10s would have been killer with this 4300. Too bad I'm still not 21 and living in my own batchelor pad. The sotts are just not enough speaker to run this thing full out in two-channel mode without blowing the paper off.

I'm afraid I don't understand the troll reference...
