ADS L810. Educate Me, Please.

They have the best midrange I have ever heard, and the bass is indeed excellent. Raising them off the floor did help with imaging/soundstaging, but I don't think that is the speaker's strength. I do have a pair of JBL's and a pair of Klipsch's which image better. If one speaker did everything well, it might be the perfect speaker, which doesn't exist. But that might be part of the fun of this insane hobby.

Absolutely, the are such a musical speaker, was a very tough speaker to pass along.
 
I just picked up a pair of L730's and am surprised how good they are at imaging, I don't have them in the best location or the best receiver (Marantz HT) but they sound very nice. This is a system that my girlfriend usually listens to during the day, It was OK before, But it's much better now

The magic is the sticky dome mid drivers. Get them 8-10 inches off the floor, nirvana!
Some got to hear my L980's at Frankenfest last weekend, and experience the imaging and mid detail as well as the outstanding bass these and other ADS's deliver. They are great to listen to for hours with no fatigue at all!

I'm calling BS. Schwarzenegger hisself would get fatigued holding a pair of 980's 8 - 10 inches off of the floor.

Who the hell would allow themselves to be photographed next to Schwarzenegger. That's like A/B'ing your Minimus 7's next to the 980's.
 
My college-era inspired bass boom taming solution entailed milk crates I already had in the basement, and door wedges to angle them up slightly. While I would love to get a pair of ADS speaker stands, not willing to pay the price for OEM or aftermarket, for that matter. This was an old school, but effective solution. What it lacks in aesthetics it more than makes up for in functionality.

Stands are easy enough to make with wood. Also keep an eye out now that it is garage-yard sale season, as well as the thrifts.
 
I used to own L610s, I now have a chance to buy a pair of L810s and wonder if I can successfully use them with my Scott 340b 35 watt tube receiver. People say the ADS speakers like high current but they seem relatively efficient and my receiver has a separate tap for 4ohm speakers so I think it should be OK. Any thoughts?

Overhead is always a good thing, but the bigger 810's seem to put out more bang for the watt than the smaller models.

I am not certain, but I think you meant you used to have L620, I have a HHScott 340b and have used if for years, it's in storage now, but there shouldn't be any problem driving the ADS speakers with it.

Thanks, You're probably right about the model number, I bought them new around 1980 and parted with them around 1995.
 
I've had my pair of ADS L810's since 1981 when I bought them new. They were $850 for the pair which was a fair amount of money back then. I remember walking in to Modern Music in Memphis and hearing them for the first time. OMG it was the best sound I'd ever heard. They had them hooked up to a high end Nakamechi system of some kind. I walked out with a pair 30 minutes later. Bought the stands too. With the stands and proper placement I never found the bass boomy. Very musical and non fatiguing. Just got bumped out by my new Aerial 7t's.
 
Keep in mind the earlier version, cloth grill, like mine do not have fuse's. As me and Porklion have been discussing in another thead.
 
I've mentioned it elsewhere here- the L810's have fantastic, killer midrange, and smooth bass. They do not image or soundstage well. It's nice to have multiple pairs/brands of speakers, in the event that I get tired of the sound. The "novelty" certainly can wear off. I will say that if listening to FM talk, or NPR, they are the best of the best. But for jazz and rock, my JBL's are my speakers of choice.

Used to sell lots of 710s and 810s at the shop where I worked in college in the 70s. Very nice speakers indeed (had LV1020s myself for a while), but the Dahlquist DQ-10 we also sold was better at imaging.

No one type or model of loudspeaker does all things well- that's why there are so many to choose from!

Certainly understand. In this case, however, I cannot think of anything that the 710 or 810 did better than the DQ-10 - other than saving the buyer about $100 per speaker :)

We also sold Magnepan MG-IIs which replaced my LV-1020s. Comparing those with DQ-10s did involve choosing which set of priorities were most important to you.
