Advent/1 or KLH Model Six - That...is the question

Being a huge fan of Henry Kloss, I couldn’t pass up a pair of Advent/1 Speakers I came across for 50.00. They’re in amazing shape, and everything is perfect on them so nothing is required to be fixed. However, as much as I’d like to keep them, I feel with my limited space I really only need one pair. I’m sure this has been discussed before - Actually I think I’ve seen a thread on this previously. But nonetheless, I was curious if somebody could give me their opinion on which pair I should keep. I know it comes down to what sounds better to me. As much as I love my model sixes, I’m thinking the advents Sound a bit better. What do you think?

The Sixes are in great condition. I just did a comparison of the two back to back. The sixes sounded way deeper and the bass was nice and tight. Better than advents. However, the highs seemed clearer on the advents...I don’t know what to do dammit LOL. I want to keep both but I probably shouldn’t which sucks. Wifeys chirping to sell one pair...I am at a loss
 
If they were Smaller Advents (the model the /1 replaced) it would be closer.
But the /1 did not use the mass loading on the woofer and the driver is a bit large for the cabinet, resulting in a roll off of low bass.

Also the Sixes are walnut veneer, I believe the Advents are vinyl clad.

Given those factors I’d go with the KLH. But I don’t have them sitting next to each other to compare. That’s what really matters.
 
Personally, I'd go with the six's. More history, better resale, designed by the same guy, and you can always add a super tweeter on top of the cabinet if you want more high end.
 
OK guys thanks for the feedback I appreciate it. That’s what I was thinking originally, especially since I have a lot of other KLH stuff...Seems to me though that the advent speakers demand more money. At least on the bay. If I can help it, I’ll keep both and use the advents in another system in the future.

Two different animals and I don't understand, my Model Sixes have amazing highs, great everything but the thing I like most is the dimensional imaging from the model sixes.

Honestly, if the photo shows how you listen to these it is not the most optimum way to set these up.

The sixes were designed as floor standers but I have found that they sound best on stands and further apart, six feet seems to be best.

I have attached a photo of how I found the KLH 6's to sound the best for me with regards to placement.

Ok cool! I will definitely try them with stands and setting them further apart. I’m listening to them now and they sound so great. I just felt the advents have a little bit cleaner high end. My problem is I can’t find stands that are affordable that will work for the sixes...What are the stands your using stevo137?

Super System lol. That was my initial thoughts when I decided to buy them. However, it’s just not gonna work. My listening room is not my ideal place (open back room) and my kids travel into this room quite a bit. I’m already afraid of coming home and having a hole in one of my sixes...If I stack them, I’m kind of afraid of one of them falling on the kids too

The stands were made by a company called Omni Stand based in Memphis and unfortunately I cannot seem to find these anywhere.

I run two pair of "stacked" Original Large Advents here in one of my systems. It's fun listen. If you have some time and some extra speaker wire, you might want to try your speakers "stacked" just for grins before you sell a pair. Like SpruceMoose mentioned, the top speakers are inverted so the tweeters are closer together. It does put a larger load on your amp so it's best to monitor the heat your receiver is giving off if you increase the volume beyond moderate.

Good luck with your decision. I've never heard them but the KLH Model Six speakers have quite a reputation for being very good at what they do.
 
Both pairs probably need a recap, especially if the highs seem muffled. I've had the Advent/1, but never heard the sixes.

I could be wrong, but those don't look like Advent woofers. I've never seen them with trim rings. The correct woofers only have 4 screws. The link below shows the correct woofers. You'll need to login again to see the photos. They are at the bottom of each post.

You're right. They're not original. The woofers on my have five screws and looks different than the original woofers. I've decided to keep them but I want to hunt down some original woofers

Bummer. At $50, what is the harm in keeping them? Less than a decent pair of jeans, two t-shirts, a dinner with even a glass of house wine, etc. I would be tempted to run them paired with each other like people have done with both of those speakers, and then you could keep the depth of the 6's and the bit more sparkle of the advents.

EDIT, as apparently others have suggested. Hoping you can find a way to do that. Even if you don't run them at the same time.

Yeah I’ve decided to keep them. Like you said, at $50, what’s the harm. The main reason I was considering selling a pair is because I’m limited with space and my wifey Just busts my balls over anything she can. The woofers arent original....I’m going to be searching for a pair of original Woofers for them

I just re-did our systems in the house. The main one I listen to, and a nice little system upstairs for a second listening space that is more near-field, and will provide nice sound while watching TV, in the space my wife and daughter like to use for their shows (This is Us, stuff like that). I thought they would really like it. And I was all excited that I was putting everything together with not very much money, and using a lot of stuff we already had. My wife said the speakers are too big, and look too 80's/90's. *sigh*. But, she is letting me keep it there and I am sure will come to enjoy it.
 
I have OLA, Advent/1, and KLH model sixes and twenty. All have been recapped, refoamed and/or redoped.

The KLH speakers are keepers, like forever. The Advent/1 are gone. They were nice, but just could not compare to either KLH. The OLA have slightly bigger sound and dig a bit deeper than the KLH, but I moved them to my garage.

Approximately how tall are the stands you are using please? I would love some like you have, but may have to just make or order some. Probably from wood. Do these have any angle to them?
