i am thinking about purchasing an Advent 300 receiver to use as a preamp tuner. How good is the phono stage in these? i read that the Hollman circuit is incredible but i would like more input from anyone who may own one...thanks.

No replies? I never owned one, but a friend of mine did back when they were brand spanking new and we did sit around his place fairly often for a listen with his Dual - so I had less experience then compared to now, but I recall two things about the receiver: first, I thought my friend was crazy to buy it because of the low power numbers, and second, that it sounded really good anyway with most of that listening being vinyl. For years now I have hoped to run upon one cheap - it's a classic, and I'm sure the quality extended to the phono pre-amp because that was the most important input in those days. Due to age, some servicing may be required is the only caveat I will mention.

I bought a 300 new back in the day. It put the lie to Julian Hirsch's statement that "all receivers under $500 sound the same". I never had faith in his opinions after that. It was advertised as a 15 watt/channel receiver that, unlike others, delivered most of its power to the speakers. The phono section, while quite good, was not a giant killer. I replaced it with an early P.S. Audio phono which was much better. However, the phono section of the 300 was probably much better than the competition - other receivers of the era. The tuner (FM only) was a surprise - it was excellent, except for a tendency to drift. I also used the 300 as a preamp for a while, but you need to use it with a sensitive amp. It put out too little power as a preamp to run any of the Dynaco amps I had. If you don't mate it with a high-sensitvity amp, you might think that either the amp is weak or the speakers demanding, when neither may be the case. It had the schematic printed on paper that was glued to the bottom. NAD came along after the 300 was discontinued and filled a similar position in the hifi world. Never heard a comparison between the rwo. I've moved on, but I still keep a pair of 300's around for shop duty and "just in case". Don't know if this is in time to help.
