Advent--Broken box repair help

FWIW. I get speakers through the recycler and many have been thrown and/or dropped hard.

I have seen broken crossovers many many times.
Since your boxes got broken, they may have taken a hit hard enough to break the crossover.

Some of the things I see are obscene. A real pity.

Something is very wrong.
Both speakers? No Bass?

Both pairs of my Heritage are part of my favorites because of the rich full bass.

Are they Advent woofers?

In all the 100s of speakers I've had, there was only one set of old H H Scott that had bad caps in the first order x-over and the bass sucked.

But, who knows where yours have been.

I have seen x-over caps that were literally exploded.
But the tweeters were fried too.
I'd look to the x-over for problems.

Just hard to believe both are bad.

Pretty sure woofers are original. They look just like any pics I can find, they have the vented dustcap and black plastic beauty ring.

I pulled out one crossover and everything looks ok and caps tested within spec.

One thing I'm wondering though is, the woofers seem a little "stiff" compared to other 8 and 6.5 in drivers I've messed with. I used a foam kit from simply speakers. What are you experiences with kits from them? Should I have used a different kit?

I think ill hook them up to a more powerful amp. Maybe my MCS 3275 (not much more power then the quad I'm using) and see how they act. Wish I had a preamp I liked and I could hook them up to a 200 watt amp but I've only got a low end onkyo I never liked the sound of much.

Or maybe ill hook my CD player directly in the power amp since it has attenuaters just to see what happens.

Mine need no high power amp.
They sound good on everything.

I use generic foams from eBay, bulk, cheap, Aleene's glue.
Simply Speaker foams are good, just frickin expensive. I don't need the glue and instructions and fancy shipping box.

It must be something in the crossovers.
A broken trace or wire, but both?!?!?!

Now, are you expecting sub-woofer thump?
That's won't happen. Good bass doesn't mean pound your chest type thump.
You should have nice full rich deep bass, capable of "rolling thunder" sort of sound.

No I didn't expect a sub type thump. I did expect them to be a little better than my Monitor Audio Bronze b4's though

Last night i put on a bass test cd and abused these speakers (and my scott r376 receiver, it got quite warm) for about an hour and a half. just let it play tones from 30 to 99 hz quite loudly. Just thinking the foams need "loosened up".

Got home today and have been listening to them on the scott receiver and they seem to sound a little better (could just be in my head). Tweeter seems a little harsh, might recap the crossover and see what that does. Might pad the tweeter down a little to.
