Advent Loudspeaker based stereo system

Sherwood S-7650 CP or Pioneer QX949A? at the same price? I understand they are different animals, roughly in the same condition, useable but ready for cleaning and repair.. Which would you choose?

I had the first two Doors albums and thought they had very good sound right from the first play on my Lab 80 Mk II with an Eico ST 70 and floor standing four speaker three way Utah speakers.... Break On Through was hot... both albums were very well done... never heard the CD. Later, those albums sounded good on a Phillips GA 212 through stacked Advents and Sony 3200f power amp with Pioneer SX 2500 as a pre. The stuff we've had and fun with through the years...

Hehe, I won't name the stuff I had earlier but it was definitely inferior to the equipment you owned. I was mainly trying to illustrate how Advents (and other good speakers) can reveal differences in record/source quality.

Just enjoying the memory of it and a way to agree with you about the Door's Albums. I bought both albums at the same time, seems like they were released at the same time, or nearly at the same time. Besides having a new kind of sound... The Doors... the audio quality was immediately noticed and appreciated.

I'm leaving to go to the pawn shop and purchase one of these two receivers. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Oh man... very hesitant to answer for someone else, especially between two disparate units. Me... I'd choose the Pioneer with the thought in mind I could go through it myself, thinking of the issues it might have, and how unique it is compared to the Sherwood, which I looked up. However, with the thought that it might need work to make it right and dependable, not being competent I could repair any issues it might have... I'd take the Sherwood and expect no problems other than a dirty switch, if that.

I'm leaning toward the Pioneer, while I like the looks and simplicity of the Sherwood. Something about running 4 sets of speakers has me a bit excited

Yes... the lure of quad. I like the looks of the Pioneer but they are not a simple unit to work on... a lot going on inside being top of the line four channel. As far as using four same type speakers I would do it in stereo with the extra power available unless you were to place each in a corner, something like that. I would buy the Pioneer and expect to have to work on it... but that's me having been all through them at one time or the other.

I just ran Stevie Ray Vaughn's Tin Pan Alley through it and these speakers are freaking crazy clean. There is some static in some of the buttons, but man does it sound sawweeeeeet.

I have the 20 watt Sherwood S-7250 CP and although it is a nice-looking design with a beautiful glowing tuner light, I would have taken that Pioneer all day instead...and I know nothing of that Pioneer other than what I can tell by the knobs, relating it to other Pioneers I have from a similar era. Nothing against the Sherwood, but mine has some pretty cheap looking knobs so I would guess the build isn't as great as the earlier Sherwoods. I also hate how the volume knob clicks when it's turned up and down instead of just turning smoothly. It always seems to be between the volume I want--a little too loud or soft. It sure drives the heck out of my speakers, though. It's hard to believe it's only 20 watts. Pretty solid sound too, especially for a $6 find at the thrift store. I still can't believe I got that price in 2020. I think you made the right decision going with the Pioneer, but my buddy has an earlier Sherwood S-7100a that he loves.

Well... now that you've done it... and everything seems to work fine... I can quit being overly objective and perhaps a bit reticent about my thoughts but it's all I could do was to tell you to buy the Pioneer. Everything I said about them is my honest opinion and I would have taken that Pioneer no doubt. I'm happy for you... I know what you are experiencing with the system you have and are putting together... get another pair of Advents.... that sound you are hearing through those pieces is the sound of a good seventies home system. Great, isn't it... so innocent and sweet sounding.

I've never heard anything remotely close, not even close. It is breathtaking! Ugh. Man, is it nice. Thank you all for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the insight very much
