Advent Repair/Restoration

It may be the underlayment but it looks pretty new. The picture is a little misleading. The flash makes the cutouts for the woofer and tweeter visible but under normal lighting, it's quite opaque. I may go for

I'm curious about the way the foams are installed, they look upside down or inverted. Is that the way they are supposed to be installed ? . . By the way, those cabs look like a million bux !! :thmbsp:
 
Yes, that's the correct for that version of the Advent. My version is the Advent Loudspeaker, sometimes called the Original Large Advent. The ones like mine with the masonite ring around the woofer have inverted foam. I'm not sure about the other versions, but you can find out here on AK. There's lots of threads about Advent foam. Also, the guy I bought the foam from can give you the info you need.
 
Thanks for the cab compliment. It wasn't too difficult and it was my first try trying to laminate. A heat gun took the old vinyl off pretty easily and the paper backed veneer was pretty easy to work with.
 
The masonite woofers are the only Advent woofers made with the inverted surrounds. All the rest have what is considered normally mounted ones with the roll sticking out.

IIRC the speaker grill fabric was designed to be part of the 'tuning' of the Advents... cut down the highs a bit... :scratch2: I believe it was in the Advent tests that Zilch did last year.

You may prefer them the way they are though.:yes:

That must be why I see a lot of threads/posts where folks are trying to get an exact match for Advent speaker cloth. Mine sound pretty good as they are. The new caps may have tamed the highs a bit. If the opportunity arises I'll probably get some though. I still prefer the look of the original over the black but I'm in no hurry to change.
