Advice, tips or tricks for fixing speaker corners and veneer replacement - early 60s cabinets

Well, I didn't follow my own plan and started mixing the bondo before adding the screws, nor did I prep the paper corners with wax.
I pulled the cardboard off after about 5-6 minutes and they came off clean as a whistle if I want to use them again. However, it's not looking bat at all...
Nice sharp corners! Couple of inconsequential voids, but should be a great platform to veneer over after sanding or using the chisel to get the right depth.
Hard as a rock after about 20 minutes and should be very solid under the veer.

This chisel seems to work really well. After cutting the straight lines with a utility knife against a metal ruler, using the wood under the veneer as a guide, I slid a 1" chisel across and getting the height was very easy.
The bondo curls up like wood chips, but much easier. I'm just going to use a bit of extra glue and sawdust in the void when laying the veneer.

And the results. This one is much harder to spot than the others and I'm happy with the results for now.
A couple of small gouges and a bit more sanding of some glue on the side, but I'll fill those nicks with another batch of bondo and hit with some wood stain markers I got from home depot.
Nice to have square tops on the speakers and no 'living edges'
Will try and live with it a few weeks and see if other folks notice or not. In any case, at the very least, I've got a good substrate on the tops to accept veneer, should I be tempted to shoot for perfection.
