Affordable Speakers 4 ohms for Pioneer SX1250 Under $1200.00

A grand for HPM 100s?
Don't do it. The HPM 100s were fine (depending on your taste) midlevel speakers, but for a grand, I'd want something like the baronial HPM 200s.

Seriously (or more seriously): listen to speakers before you buy them. Tastes differ enormously, and reviews, even the rare reviews which are actually relatively unbiased and are written by reviewers who know what acoustic instruments actually sound like (which is what I think a speaker should be able to reproduce) can misguide you - maybe all you listen to is EDM. Even if you can ship them back, the hassle is likely to make you keep them, and then you are slightly unhappy everytime you listen. Which isn't the point.
I'd buy a modest pair of speakers, or maybe you already have a pair, and use them for a while. Get used to their strengths and weaknesses, and see how much location affects the sound. Listen to other speakers and keep an eye on tag sales and craigslist. Sooner or later, you will find something that you love, or something that is so cheap that you are willing to use it for a while and then sell it when something better comes along.

I also have a Pioneer SX-1250. I think I got lucky when I bought my ADS L810s. They are amazing! When listening to them at a used high-end audio store, I auditioned them against a more modern pair of English speakers that were about $1500, and preferred the older ADS. So now I'm shopping for smaller bookshelf speakers for my office, and looked for options from ADS. I picked up a pair of L780s, and while nice (they sounded good in the seller's house), when auditioning them in my house back to back against the 810s, they just don't come close to the power, efficiency, clarity, and overall "bigness" of the sound of the 810s. Not a fair comparison, but I think I'll keep looking for bookshelf speakers that come closer to my 810s.

A grand for HPM 100s?

Seriously (or more seriously): listen to speakers before you buy them.

1) HPM100 speakers have been appreciating lately. A grand is going rate in many areas.

2) Listen before you buy is good and all, if by that you mean in your listening space with your source and amplification. Anything else is a near useless listening test since much changes from room to room once you get to a certain spl.
