I see aesthetics playing a big role in things here. I noticed you mentioned the intrusiveness of the gear as a factor. It would also appear that your livingroom system is the main system. This never worked for me and while I do have a good purist system in my living room, I have 2 other massive systems that make up what I call my hobby. I work on one while I use the other and back and forth. They are entirely different and allow me see the other side of the mountain. I don't compare them I just let them roam where want. My SET based livingroom system on the other hand gets played all the time but I never actually listen to it sonically, i am always doing other things while it's on. I actually have to adjust the balance because where I like to sit is so far off centre. It just plays awesome music for hours on end.

I found years ago that a single main system regardless of its quality could never hold my interest. It homogenized my music over time and always left me uninspired. Our minds get used to a sound and we plateau. IMO the rocky ledge you happened to plateau on is rather jagged. Been there and done it myself.

There's no need to look through, or even at, a camera/phone when taking pictures. Just hold it up and snap a dozen or so shots and pick the best one later. No need to take the eyes off the road. I'm sorry they scare you. But it's possible to do that safely (obviously)
