FWIW, I've seen brown and silver covers on various examples of 7c.

My bride and I do our level best to spoil each other and she is tough to keep up with. ;)
 
Learning more about the differences between the 7C and 7T.

Now it is easy to tell the difference. The T has 3 holes punched into the front panel below the flip switches. A tape loop and headphones ¼"TRS jacks.
 
The original switch caps can be found on that auction site. I think the silver ones were used on the re issues as well. I could be wrong.

Thank you. I'm going to research when, and if, Marantz went to the silver caps on the 7C.

This preamp was one owner and in place for more than 50 years. It's very possible that he replaced the brown caps with silver for looks.

I like the looks of the silver but also want to respect the original and stock preamp so.....to replace or not to replace? That is the question.

Maybe the family has the brown caps in a 'hi-fi box' somewhere?

The secret to that in my opinion is early childhood training of the spouse. My wife grew up in a household where my father in-law had a modest hifi system. Fisher receiver and bookshelf speakers, a turntable and reel to reel. Nothing special, but she and her sibs were conditioned to having one around the house.

So when I started dating her circa 1980, there was no big surprise when she walked into my living room and there was a stereo.

Believe me, there are a lot of spouses that would NEVER put up with a pair of JBL butt cheeks in the family room, or gigantic floor standing Tannoys in the living room.

It's one reason why Bose Acoustamass sell so well. High WAF because they blend into the room.

No worries.

I had to chuckle when I read your post as I look at our JBL 4430s, Klipsch LaScalas and JELabs-based Open Baffle speakers (University 6201 drivers) in our den (aka, 'Man Cave').

I finally traded my Khorns away. Had them in the living room for 10 years.

The same living room that was supposed to be big hi-fi free.....

New paint, new floor and new furniture is in process. ;)
