Air cooled Volkswagen appreciation thread

There was a green one of those around here for a good while. No idea what happened to it. I was tempted to buy it and restore it to stock. Looks like its just a different hood.
 
From what I recall, both were virtually the same car, except for the transplanted Rolls Royce Radiator.... which as an Englishman was sacrilege !
 
One of many lessons I learned about this puppy - never engage the hand brake overnight in sub freezing weather. I'll never forget being stranded in the mountains of NC waiting on the brake to thaw.

Maybe those yankees up north already knew this. :biggrin:

I'm thinking he was referring specifically to the "Rolls" vs a regular VW. About the only thing they did with that Rolls kit was change the standard hood to the Rolls one. Quite probably right about the Super Beetle as the basis though. The hood is a bit wider down low.


I had a 73 Super Beetle after I wrecked my 68. Curved windshield, struts, etc. Definitely drove better than the '68 once the struts got replaced. When we took it apart, someone else had been in there and put the upper bearing plates back together wrong. Instead of being able to rotate at the top, any time I turned the wheel the spring was actually rotating in the pocket. I just assumed the heavy steering was because it was manual. It was a whole new car with suspension that actually operated correctly.
 
When my dad bought the vw station wagon in the 60,s they gave him a book with factiods in it and also lots of cute jokes about the bug .Anybody have or remember it?

me too... saved it from the crusher and drove it over 2 years. Baby Blue, 4 speed, JC Whitney sport exhaust and intake. I came close to buying a 66 a few years back... but I'll stick with 2-stroke, air cooled motorcycle restoration :)
 
A friend and I restored this light custom -74 1300 back around 92-93, got a 2,4 liter type 4 engine around 180 hp, really quick.
Had Kerscher disc brake convertion both front and rear. Porsche wheels.

In 1974 I owned a nice 2002tii and was tooling down Hwy 24 @ about 105 when this old guy 'blew' by me in a yellow VW with a big grin on. Quite surprising.
 
Seriously considered buying this one last year, but had nowhere to put it. It's sort of been the story of my life really. Whenever I see a cool car, I either have somewhere to put it but don't have the money, or have the money but nowhere to put it.

Unless there is hidden rot that one does look nice. The ovals with the "wings" on the back are very cool. Looks like its on the swing axle pan too, lots of camber in those rear wheels.
