Aiwa M700B thrift store Cassette player find

so I went to the grand reopening of a Value Village in my neighbourhood today. Got there a little late and it was a zoo! Walked past the jewelry, kitchen stuff, records (swarms of pickers there), and realized they put the electronics at the other side of the store. Darn!

Went there in time to see a guy filling his cart with a few amps including a silver face, and then he put a Technics 1200 on top! Double darn! Saw a couple of meters on a black faced beauty and grabbed it before he could grab it.

It is an Aiwa M700B cassette player in very nice condition! It powers up but I suspect it will require a belt kit or more.

Does anyone know who I should order this from!

It is a beautiful unit, and I think I am going to go through it myself to see if I can make it operational. Metal capable, three head, dual motors, what's not to like?

Here's are picture!

Nice grab!

I'm still researching it, but it does power up. No tape motion, but I wasn't really expecting it. Once I get it working, it will be competing with a Denon deck for first place.

Looks like two belts have dissolved. It's going to be fun to get the dissolved belts off the capstan wheels. Looks really good inside though. Now if I can find the length of the belts I need...nothing coming up on google search.

If it looks flat you can use the string method of tying a string around the two pulleys and then measuring that. It's not exact but it's better random guesses. Maybe you can find out if other decks used the same transport and look those up as well.

Yeah, I'm considering using the string method. At this point, I don't see much alternative. One belt is definitely flat, and one looks square. I think I can probably use the same method to find it out too. Problem is I can find very little about it. At least the search engines I've been using aren't finding very much. These drives have a lot of parts I need to dig in to in order to get to the belts.

So I brought this deck to my tape tech a little over a year ago.

After 6 months, he told me he couldn’t get the parts. I spent the next 6 months asking him if he had put it back together again so I could take it back, every two weeks. I finally got it back from him in July. I spent two weeks looking into it. One of the belts had been replaced, but the others hadn’t been, or else he took out his belts before he gave it back to me, leaving one in. But during the year I was waiting for it, I had ordered and received a belt kit. Installed the beLet kit, and yes, there was still a problem. Took apart the tape mechanism, and I found a rubber bumper that had turned to glue. After considering what I could do, I realized the Dual Steurpimple fix just might work here. It did. The player was then working properly, but playback was a little slow. Adjusted the motor speed and it was still slow. Sprayed a little deoxit into it and moved the adjust back and forth, and the speed seems to be right now. Yay! It sounds quite good now!

Nice fix. Glad you did not give up when your tech couldn't fix it. Love the VU's! Let us know if it beats the Denon.

Thanks! During that year while I was waiting, I started playing around with a few other decks. I found that changing belts isn’t as hard as I at first thought. The hardest part is figuring out what is not happening, and then trying to make it happen.
