Hi all.
Looking for some help. Just searched the thread and found no answer. I am ready to order my parts in Canada. I see inductors around the spec'd one. 24 mH, .31 ohms or 27 mH, .34 ohms. What can I expect using either of these, or is it critical I get the exact PE 25 mH, .33ohm units?

Second question. Alternate options for the i core inductor? I will continue my search as I look for a response. That of course is the only part out of stock at PE today.

Hey all, I pulled the trigger on this project and got some added inspiration from others to make my version of the "Shindig-nia"( can't remember their phrasing or who coined that, but I love it.) It will be a portable set-up with the speaker boxes optionally detachable, TA2020 or similar amp and undecided on added battery option.
I've got woofers, tweeters, capacitors and the boxes are pretty much done. I was torn regarding bracing, skipped it as the wood is pretty solid at 1". I went with a knock the loose stuff off, hand-sanded, rough sawn pine. Pretty happy with the results. The picture is without finish, but decided on a home brew danish oil . I will update after next photo session.
My hat's off to everyone involved in this project and this forum, and my thanks in advance to all who have patience for the electronics help I anticipate needing.

I like the rough-swan pine idea. No point in having portable speakers that can't take a little abuse.

Speaking of abuse, protecting the dome tweeter looks like a priority. Metal grills?

I love that look and can't wait to see the finished product.

Ray built a boom box but I don't recall how close the speakers came to our indignia concept. Which btw is a take off of Best Buy's Insignia line which was the inspiration for this build.
 
Progress

Baffles are done, base unit is well on its way, TA2020 should be here this week. Inductor coils are the issue now. Wife is going to Las Vegas in 2 weeks, I may get them shipped to her hotel. Shipping to Canada is a killer. I found another supplier for comparable coils that had stock and the shipping would have been quite a bit more than the parts. Thanks for the support guys. The danish oil I used gave the lighter pine a yellow hue. I went with a tinted oil for the base unit and like that look too. Pondering applying some of that to the light speaker boxes to darken them some. I originally tested dark on a piece of the same wood and it seemed to hide the contrasting grain I wanted to stand out

Outstanding! I should contract to you next time I need a set! Keep that router guide. There are always folks popping in here needing baffles that don't have the tools to do it themselves. It would be nice if the person doing the work wasn't me. :)

Does anyone have an updated parts list and pricing for these? Last time I was on the Parts-Express website, their link didn't appear to be correct... Didn't seem to have everything.
 
Damping

Been laying low awhile, and want to get my speakers done. As far as damping goes I am going to try fiberglass hvac filter material doubled up to 2". Anybody used or heard of this stuff being used? It looks like it could do the job, its easy to get and it's moderately cheap(3 - 20x25 filters for $5.00).
 
I don't think that would work all that well. The stuff in filters is made to not inhibit the airflow. What you want in a speaker is something that kind of does the opposite. Plain old wall insulation would work better and if you know someone remodeling or who is in construction you can probably get enough scraps to do it free.

The cu.ft. seems pretty close but the cabinet isn't deep enough….but….would it work if the port tube was vertical out the top? The cabs are dirt cheap, don't look bad, and one could probably do a top port through the wood top panel and make it look OK.

What are your thoughts AK'rs? Dumb idea? Good Idea? No Idea? LOL

I used a 90 degree bend on mine, don't recall if the plans called for that, but it works great.

Another thing I did with a different (ewave) setup was cutting the baffle out entirely and adding a much thicker one on the front of the box, making the whole thing deeper inside and out. If you leave a little bit of the old baffle board all around, the thick board sticks out and leaves a step, down to the original front edges. I then filled that angle in with some nice looking half-round wood to give it more modern radiused corners, which reduce diffraction from the box edges.
