AK Retiree Club

Being you asked @juncers.... it's a sh*t town north of Detroit called Flint, famous lately for the city water being undrinkable. But that's just the most recent reason to say it's worse than Detroit.

PS it's also the title of a Robert Plant song
PPS I haven't lived in town in 20 years but I worked there until yesterday!

Plus it gave the world Michael Moore and Grand Funk Railroad. :yikes:

... and I thought being born in New Jersey was bad.

You lost me here. About the same situation - I'm 68, wifey is 61. Where do you get Obamacare for $102/mo? Wifey's is $1017/mo.

Why will it cost so much more when she goes on Medicare?[/QUOTE]

Usedto, the amount for the Obamacare is for my wife only. The amount is based solely on our income, which is $24,000 or less, depending on how much we need to get by from our retirement account. The amount determined for her was $102. SS is not income as far as the government is concerned.

The amount quoted for medicare was a total of my cost per month for Part A, plan B drug plan, dental plan, supplement A cost and then all those costs doubled for a monthly cost and then times 12 for a yearly total of $10,080. This is probably going to be way more because of time going by.

Going to a record swap at a coffee shop, only taking a few LP's with me. I'll see how this goes, I don't have high hopes. Well I have high hopes for a decent cuppa!

Record swap was about what I expected, hardly any records to swap, LOL Stopped by a record shop when I left, the place is pretty new. I'm suprised anybody new to vinyl is interested in it with the prices these shops are charging. I looked at what I think was a original Sly And The Family Stone~Stand, yellow label EPIC. I would rate it as poor, tons of scratches but no gouges. There's no way I would play it on any of my TT's, $18. Lots of other records just like that. :wtf:

PS I was the only one in the place on a rainy Sat. afternoon
PPS my brother and SIL took us out for a nice retirement celebration dinner later :beerchug:

Well all you retired, or soon to be retired, AK folks, I`m pretty sure that I "undesirably" retired much sooner than most, if not all of you folks !! ;)

This is not meant to be a "Woe is Me", sad story !!

I, for those that don`t already know from reading my accounts of it in the past on AK, was forced to physically retire at the ripe old age of 26, soon to be 27 yrs. while residing in the hospital, when an abscess formed on the outside of my brain, and started growing over a period of several weeks from pea to walnut sized before the hospital finally operated on me, after three prior scheduled operations were made, and then cancelled over those first several weeks, all the while the medical staff was assuring my family, Fiancee, & me that this developing hemi paresis was temporary, and all my loss of use of my left extremities would return, post operation !! o_O

And in doing so, by pushing against my skull it started slowly cutting off the oxygen to that portion of my brain that controlled my left side motor control functions, starting with my left hand fingers and progressing up my arm and on down through to my left leg.

And since the delayed operations allowed that plum sized portion of my brain to be denied oxygen, it became destroyed, leaving me permanently paralyzed(like a stroke) on my left side, but with full feeling sensitivity. :dunno:

Whilst going through all this ordeal from 11/19/81 until 4/1/82 when the hospital through months of physical therapy helped me to become able to walk with a regular cane, they then discharged & handed a ~$ 96,000.00 bill to me(Mr. Instant Indigent !!) as it was determined by the staff that I had plateaued in physical therapy and my progress had become very, very slow.

During all this, my brick and mortar electronic business that I had acquired in 2/81 with a trusted older friend/partner was failing, as he couldn`t run it very well himself, and my portion of generated income for it was non-existent and, of course, no income for me as well, as we couldn`t afford medical insurance for two people and still have liability insurance, which is very important to have, especially operating in South Miami FL. :bye:

Anyway, moving on..

I thought while being in that Dade county hospital all those months, that these medical game playing bozos had screwed me and I should talk to an attorney after I was discharged, to see if the County hospital could be held responsible, since, when I was admitted, all that was wrong with me was that I had, had three seizures earlier in the day and two weak fingers on my left hand, and a pea size mass between my brain & skull, that was observed after being scanned via a CAT X-ray machine !!

The two year legal wrangling wait netted me a non-contested on the "metaphorically speaking" court house steps Med-Malpractice award annuity for life with a 6% compounded raise every year starting in 1985 with that starting amount, that was based on my prior earning amounts/capability as determined by the defendants high priced 5 guy law firm, and agreed to by me..

So it would seem that this (currently) tax free life time annuity is my retirement, and I am currently spending way, way less than is provided to me annually, and am socking away the majority of it, as I live a pretty simple life(paid off my ~2000 sq. ft. 1989 purchased house in 1999 + bought out my deceased parent`s retirement river front house property in 2016 from my 2 sisters as an investment, and I also carry no ongoing credit card debt ) and have no other debts, just monthly normal bills.. :beerchug:

I have accumulated over 30 years, a fairly large and valuable vintage guitar/tube amp collection, that is appraised every 10 years, and 3 or so years ago was last appraised at around $ 250,000.00 !!! So I can sell off those items, if I need to, should something financially drastic happen`s in my never been married, soon to be 64 yrs old solo life..

I have my living will/trust carefully & completely setup, so my affairs are in order.. :bigok:

And FWIW. I typed this overly long winded :blah: diatribe with my right hand index finger, as is done with all my typed communications.

Please don`t feel sorry for, or jealous of my situation, if, you might be so inclined, folks !!

I`m just plugging along, and though it`s a different way of life, it is what it is..

Take care and have a great Labor Day Holiday, Monday, as you folks see fit.

Kind regards, Billy Ferris

Thank you parman, for reading, and responding to my long winded diatribe Sir.

And it was different than I was mentally prepared for in my future life !!
Working with high voltage vacuum tube electronic repairs, motorcycle riding, scuba driving, etc. were always in the back of my mind for life altering potentially undesirable situations, but not what happened under the trust of supposedly top notch experienced & educated Medicos, as was repeatedly conveyed to me, that were controlling my future life & well being !!

And Sir. thank you for taking the time to read through my strange change of life retirement diatribe here on AK..

Take care Sir. and enjoy the rest of the day, as you can do best.

And again, thank you for taking the time to read my bazaar forced retirement story..

Kind regards, OKB

Have found the following input from others as well on retirement.

The house/condo.apt gets smaller.

The job/honey do list gets longer.

It's better to build the Cave before this time.

Exercise is a must for shorter drug bills.

If no pet in home, get one.

Join a club.

Pray more!

Didn't sleep for sh*t last night, glad I didn't have to get up and go to work !!!

Sorry to hear about your sleep difficulties parman.
Happens to me every so often, and sucks when it does, even though I`m retired and don`t have to go to work.

Retired 10years ago @ the ripe age of 55. Travel quite a bit, mostly in the US and Central America. Fly fishing, motorcycles, coffee roasting & cycling beside 2 channel audio occupy my time. I forgot, taking care of our property can take hours daily depending on what time of the year it is. My wife still has a ways to go. She has a short commute and still enjoys her job. Fit mind and bod and with any luck, I'll make 80.

We used to travel alot more than we have the last 10 years because of changes to the wifes job . I think by next year we will both be free to get back to our old ways, at least I hope so. We pretty much go to the ocean when we travel

I'm on the bubble at 62 and haven't worked for 16 months. There's very little engineering left in wireless cell site deployment as everything is DAS and Small Cell. Nothing out there except field engineering and construction mgmt which I can't really do safely or at the required pace. My resume covers 43 years of engineering which usually gets rejected by some bot the next day. They don't have to ask your age to know your age unless you cheat on your resume. Your 'cover' is blown when you get to the interview with gray hair and a cane no matter what. Well at least the first 5 times anyway. Try to prove it's age related, yah right. Might as well take on Hooter's for not being hot or female enough to be "cast member". The anxiety and lost sleep has been soul-crushing lately. I got some counseling help and made a decision over the last week or so. I decided to give up a fight my pride wants to wage that I just can't win. Arthritis has taken my knees, 1 hip, my L4/5 vertebrae and left me dead calf muscles and a drop foot. My roof access ladder climbing days are done, really done. I can't walk or stand much either. Sitting at a desk for more than a half hour sets off major hamstring spasms that if medicated into submission make me way too loopy for engineering. So I'm done 5 years earlier than my nest egg was planned for, have no pension and 4 years before max SS is available. My wife is working for insurance and I'm in the process of applying for SS disability. So I guess I really retired 16 months ago, it just took me this long to notice :)

I'm healing up from rotator cuff surgery 3 weeks ago so my main exercise activities of swimming and biking are on hold for now as is most physical activity around the house, including wood working. So for now there's reading, music, AK, a very little bit of TV watching, chasing the wife around the house and no I don't really care if I only catch her when she lets me catch her :)
