Akai AA-1030- Little Bro ????
Howdy, bigshawn.... I recently picked up an Akai AA-1030 for the same price as you mention......
Nice, clean looking, clean sound, some neat FM tuning features....adjustable muting circuit.... 30 WPC..... kinda dry sounding,
Not sure if they're related, but I like mine just fine.......worth the price of admission....absolutely!!

It is hard to find Akai out there.
When I can remember to look for their receivers I do but in the last two years, I've yet to bump into one.
From the pictures that I've seen, I really like the looks. Hoping that when I get one the sound will be good as well. Currently I'm digging early 70s Sansui receivers. Built like tanks and just such a smooth sound. I thought I would like Yamaha after reading so much about them here but not so much, kind of dry and lacking emotion is how I would typify them.
Please keep posting info and pics on your Akai if you get a chance. Love to learn more about them.

Id be happy to oblige! This my AA-1020. Needs new bulbs and I have to take the faceplate to the glass works shop up the road to get a new bit of glass made for where its cracked near the tuning knob. It will look fantastic with new glass and globes.
When it comes to Yamaha gear I kind of agree, I was really excited when my mum found a CR-420 for $5. I tricked myself into the sound of it the first day or so but after a while I really didn't enjoy it. I've been listening to my Pioneer SX-5000 for the past month or so and the sound (to my ears) is much nicer to listen to. Now I've dug up the AKAI I might use it for a while.
EDIT: mmmmmmmmm, Ive been listening to the AKAI a bit now. Sounds fantastic, enjoying it more than my CR-420 anyways. I think I'll go get those bulbs and the glass now!

Found one of these myself and except for a slightly bent balance pot and a little nicotine staining it is beautiful shape. I am having a little trouble figuring out how to replace the dial bulb on the tuning knob side, anyone have any idea how to access it, and what the specs of it are? I haven't owned an Akai since these weren't considered vintage, it was state of the art then. Still sounds good and the tuner with the variable mute works wonderfully.

It's an old thread, but I was hoping to find the specs for the dial bulbs myself. I just got this unit (AA 1030 actually) and ALL of the bulbs are out.
Akai didn't think this one out very well as far as bulb placement. Both dial bulbs can only be accessed by unscrewing the small vertical posts that have the tuner string wheels mounted on them....YEAH RIGHT!!! I have to restring to change a bulb!!! ....I just bent the gasket holder to the side. You can see these posts in mattwizes picture. Once I find the correct bulbs, I'll figure another way to secure them.
I haven't a clue how to access the meter bulb.

Just picked one up at a share shack near 100 mile house. Well built early 70's, solid aluminum knobs, four gang fm tuner, blackout dial, nice looking, and great sounding reciever. The phono preamp is two stage, and looks to use excellent parts. Not to powerfull, mabye 25-30 watts, but sounds excellent.
