Got a chance to pick-up an AKAI for 150$. Is that a good deal? Are Akai receivers any good in general? Looks to be near mint condition and need a few opinions as to whether or not it is worth it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

I'd pass, especially at that price. I don't think that I'd even pay $50 for that receiver. There are much better options for that kind of cash. Akai did have some bigger badder receivers. I've always thought that an AA-1175 would be a nice one to have. I had one of those AA-R50's once. I guess that it is an ok receiver. Just not what you'd expect for $150 and I think that you'd be disappointed with it. I have an AA-1175, but was never able to get it to work. It is very well built though. I think that you'd be very pleased with it or something similar and could probably pick one up for about the same price, maybe less.:)

the earlier AA -10XX and AA-11xx series are good sounding and well made...with the top of the range aa-1200 probably the most sought after.

I didn't know of the AA-1200, but with 120 WPC, I'd say it's probably comparable to the Pioneer SX-1050. I don't know anything about them, but those quad and computerized receivers that Akai made seem interesting.

likewise..i only found out about the aa-1200 when i got an aa-1175.
From the pics on the web, it does look like a brute of a receiver though...

this thread has gone astray from the actual listing. All I am asking is are AKAI receivers worth owning, and are they as good as a pioneer, sansui, marantz or whatever. What are they comparable too? I'm assuming not to many people care about them because you don't hear much mentioned to often.

When asking opinions about quality, sound and value you will get a wide range of responses. As for the quality of the Akai gear, I love the stuff!!! I do own the monster AA-1200 and wouldn't trade it for anything!! As for sound, it comes right down to your ears. My Akai AA-1200 replaced a near mint Marantz 2270 reciever because the Akai gear can take abuse and keep on ticking. The Marantz is somewhere in the garage collecting dust!! If the AA-r50 is local see if you can hear it. As for pricing I believe that to be a little on the high end of the pay chart. I have seen these go from $35 - $80. For $150 you can double the power and the options easily. Akai's arent the most desired units in the world and the prices reflect that. Don't knock'em till you try'em!

yes..the model numbers i mentioned are worth owning..they are not as common as sansui marantz pioneer etc.. but in the case of the aa-1175 and aa-1200 and a few others the build and sound quality is nothing to be ashamed of.

You pretty much answered all of my questions. Thanks. The AA-R50 on CL looks in mint condition and I also like the looks. Maybe I can beat him down a little on the price. Thanks again everyone for all the opinions and help.

I realize this was four years ago but did you ever buy that Akai AA-R50? The people on this site a usually very knowledgeable but they "goofed" and got this completely wrong. I bought my first Akai AA-R30 back in 1980. It was a tank and sounded great. I eventually bought every one in that series ending with the AA-R50. It is 62 watts per channel but feels like much more. For instance, I have a 2014 Yamaha RS-700 receiver rated at 100 watts per channel. I drove a vintage set of Technics SB-7000A speakers and it sounded good. Conversely I hooked up the vintage AA-R50 to those Technics and could not turn the volume knob past 10 o'clock, it was much stronger and actually sounds better than the Yamaha. Don't be fooled by the wattage rating, those vintage Akai watts are really under rated power wise. I think the people on this site can be forgiven because it sounds like they never actually heard one of the AA-R line of receivers built in the early eighties. To all those who haven't experienced these Akai receivers, you owe it to yourself to track one down and give it a serious listen.
