Akai GX 747 DBX Reverse Play problem

Hi everyone, I have Akai GX747DBX and when I try to play a tape that I recorded in both directions using my Teac X2000R, I only am able to play from the standard direction not the reverse direction. When I try to play it in reverse all I get is the normal direction music backwards. I don't get what is causing it to do that. Backwards play only results in literally backwards of the normal direction music, this is the same for when i try to record backwards using this.

Sounds like a head alignment issue between the two decks. One thing you can do is take some clear leader tape, place it in the tape path of the X2000r, and mark the track positions of the reverse record head. Then move the tape over to the Akai and see how these marks line up to it's rev. play head.

Is this a problem that only developed recently but did not occur in the past? If it is a recent and sudden change, head alignment is probably not the cause but the cause could be a problem with the circuits that control which play head signals are connected to the internal amplifier circuits in forward and reverse play. In other words, if the forward play head rather than the reverse play head is connected to the amplifier circuits when the deck is operating in reverse mode, the result will be reverse playback of the forward audio tracks.

Is there a relay issue? I would be looking for a switching element. A slider perhaps, that is actuated by a solenoid when reverse play is engaged. I have doubts that head alignment could have changed that drastically.

Thanks for your reply everyone, I was starting to think my unit was a faulty one that made it out of the factory. I bought it about 2 years ago from the previous owner who kepted it in its original box because according to him by the time her got it (1982) everyone started to switch to CDs so he never used it, so it sat in its box in mint shape. I used it alot but never thought deeply about this problem before. I guess I'll just have to bring it to my tech.

Old VinylDude is on the right track. I believe there is a solenoid slider switch at the bottom inside case from the back. It is somewhat large (maybe half the width of the deck). Short of an overall clean and lube on the mechanics while you're there, a liberal shot(s) of some De-oxit while working the mechanism will switch back and forth between the forward direction heads and the reverse direction heads. Good luck.
