I have a pair of these although the front is a bit different and they have a 1' length of wire instead of a jack. They were originally bundled with a quadrophonic Akai reciever in packs of 4.
The driver is a 4" Fostex FE103 (alnico magnet) in a transmission line enclosure - that hole at the back is the T-line's vent. There's not a whole lot of bass due to the short line and low excursion driver, but I found that coupled with the right amplification (e.g. T-amp or tubes), they sound extremely good on vocals and image very well. A sub is a must though although it needs to be a well-controlled one or the bass won't "keep up".
Since you've just got the one orphan, it might do well in a low power HT rig as centre channel. For vocals there it will really shine.
I have busted many of these up, for the 4" FE103'S....and sold them off to Asia. These were quite popular over the last few years! I use to get $40-60 US for a good working pair of drivers!!
Akai was famous for reel to reel tape recorders with built in amplifier and speakers in their native japan - The speakers in these units were mounted on board the recorders' side panels facing outwards due to lack of space, but with metal flaps so one could reflect the sound to the front. The Jet streams were an efficient step up option, for those owners who wished for a better forward facing, three dimensional stereophonic effect.
Akai supplied cables with 1/4 " phono plugs on either end for quick and easy hookup to these tape players.
They were not the best speakers but their size and styling was very popular in smaller Japanese homes.
