All of our cats are dying!

:tears: I fear that distemper is going around.

Four of my dad's cats have died since last week. They were our shop cats. He took one of them in to the vet this week because she wasn't looking very good. She gave her some shots although I'm not sure what they were. She ended up dying the following day. Apparently the vet didn't seem to think it was distemper.

I saw one of the male cats in the shop and he had defecated on himself and was just laying there. I feel really bad as these were some nice cats. We had them fixed although my sister didn't feel it was worth it to get them distemper shots and such. I'm thinking that was a bad choice. :no:

Here is a pic from last summer only a few months old. Cry Baby on the left just died this week. She is the one my dad took into the vet.

WOWSorry for your loss. I hope you can find out what caused it. No more animals tho till you do a thorough cleaning. Please.
 
Ouch. Really sorry to hear it those are some cute animals!

I'd second (or third) the recommendation to scour your shop and see what, if anything, they might be getting into.

Bad choice is an understatement. Those animals deserved every chance they had at survival. It's a pitty when people take on a responsibility with living breathing animals and fail them miseably. :thumbsdn:

Very sorry to hear this. Hope some of them will survive. If not, at least you gave them a good home.

Google leptospirosis....

.... it takes animals pretty quick.Contact with mouse or rat droppings and soil contaminated by such.
I would think you would see some early signs / symptoms with distemper.......:dunno:

I'm really sorry to hear about your cats. Losing one is hard enough, let alone four. They all look very sweet.
 
One thing I didn't realize was that some basic insecticides are deadly to cats. I had a flea outbreak around here a few years back and sprayed the whole yard, then went to buy some topical flea treatment for the dog. The guy at PetSmart asked if I had cats, I told him I only had a dog. He said that certain flea treatments for dogs are deadly to cats, and if I had any cats that I'd need a different brand since just being around a dog treated with the stuff I bought would kill a cat.

Well, the yard spray I had already used contained the cat killer, permethrin. It's used to kill stuff like spiders around the house as well as fleas in the yard.

I don't have a stray cat problem, but I was surprised that this stuff is so deadly to cats.

About 20 years ago I lost a whole tribe of cats to FeLV. Then when I moved to my present home, several died within a year from various casuses. A couple jumped the fence and were hit by cars, One was killed by a stray dog. Another was catnapped (an Abyssinian), He returned after being gone for five months, but he had starved on the journey and his kidneys failed.

That was the strangest thing, For months after he disappeared I would go out every night and call him. I canvassed the neighborhood thinking maybe he got shut in to a garage or shed or something. On a couple of occasions I actually saw him in the yard, but it was a wishful thinking hallucination.

Then, after five months I was out calling, and saw him again. I thought this was the most bizarre hallucination ever, but he meowed. He weighed practically nothing, but he had found his way home.
 
I'm very sorry to hear about all the animal losses in this thread, I've been there, lost a cat suddenly to renal failure a few years back. I hope you can manage to save the rest of your cats Denny, good luck.

Any life the cats had is still better than if they had been sitting in a shelter waiting to be euthanized. It's not as simple as just following the recommendations from your Vet as most vets will tell you whatever they think will open up your wallet regardless of if it's necessary or not.

Some animals are treated so badly by their owners euthanizing may be best if they can't get a good home. At least they will not suffer any more. I don' like the idea but animals are sometimes kicked, beaten and starved to name a few cruelties. "they shoot horses don't they?"

As for the vet, you need to have one you can trust. They are out their.

This thread just makes me value the pets I have and have had. Some have had easier and longer lives than others, but they were all loved. Sometimes bad stuff happens.
 
Oh man, so sorry to hear about the cats, Denny. They were such an adorable litter of kittens. I hope you find out what it was.
