I thought you might like an update on the story. I bought the original 8" woofer. I received it and tried installing it this weekend. I put the speaker in turned the amp on. It popped like the other one. I swapped it into the other speaker cabinet after removing the driver in it, and started the amp up. It popped. I took my audio player and was able to hear it play.
I started thinking what could be the problem. I thought it must be the amp. I thought maybe the impedance didn't match the speakers. I googled the repair manual and the specs did not give an answer. I was looking over the models and schematics and noticed that there was something called YST.
It is a Yamaha AV-66 YST integrated amplifier. YST was something apparently proprietary to Yamaha speakers. The repair manual showed a YST switch on the back. I pulled the unit out, turned it around, and the YST switch was sitting in the middle. I push it up to conventional. Hooked everything back up and I got sound. I believe there is something wrong with the output circuitry because one speaker cut out. The puzzling thing is the amp worked fine with some early 2000s RCA branded minimus 7 style speakers.
I pulled the amp out and substituted a recent model Yamaha AV receiver with Bluetooth. Hooked the Allisons up, turned it on, paired it with my iPhone and was playing. Sounded very good. I bet the other KEF speaker was okay from the start.
The speaker with the original Allison tweeter and woofer has a distinct, open, airy sound to it, and they were perfectly matched.
