Altec 19’s w Other woofers

An old girlfriend long ago taught me that if it fits and feels good, do it!

I ran 416-8B's in 620 cabinets EQ'd to hell and back as a woofer system under large format mantarays with Selenium clones of JBL slot tweeters hanging from stiff wire in the center of the mantaray mouths. Sounded damn good, looked atrocious.

I know more than one fella who has loaded 825/828 cabinets with 604's with very satisfactory results. I'm sure that makes the 604 crowd shriek with horror. ;)
I do have a Question about the Reconing of my 604g’s. As well as Diaframs!
I know they are 8 ohms.
Is there any difference Sonically?
Between 8 and 16 ohms.
My intended use is Low Powered Tube amps

16 ohm would have a high BL. 16 ohm will require a bigger choke in a passive network.
BL?
Yeah Passive Xover’s I have are 8 ohms
So if I went 16 ohms they wouldn’t be correct
Do I buy New From Great Plains or Custom?

Bl - The product of magnet field strength in the voice coil gap and the length of wire in the magnetic field, in tesla-metres (T·m).

Higher BL = more control of the woofer.

This is a primary reason that tube amp users prefer higher impedience speakers owing to the very low damping factors of tube equipment relative to solid state.

Thanks for that information
I always preferred the 16 Ohm jbl Woofers
Now I understand why

After reading that article on Damping factor
It explains why while doing an amp shoot out
On my Jbl’s with quite a few highly regarded
vintage tube amps Hk Citation 2 , 5 Running in Triode , Mac 240 ,Marantz 8b, Radio Craftsmen 500’s, Fairchild I think 260 mono’s
And finally a pair of Fisher 55a’s.
So after they warmed up we said Eh nothing special. Well after a call to a friend he said
Turn the dial on the amps!
Turned out to be a Holy Sht moment
That dial was for adjustable Damping!
By far the best Push pull Amps I ever heard on my Jbl’s!

“OHM IS NOT A CHANT!”

Lol. OT but it reminds me of a picture this guy I work with has on his tool box

The relationship between load and source in terms of impedance at every link in the audio chain is perhaps the most important, and most overlooked factor in setting up any manner of audio system.

The Peavey white paper on impedance offers a lot of good info that's hardly limited to pro audio.

Another interesting Read!
Although he doesn’t mention Tube amps
other than using Transformers to match speakers impedance.
What is your Opinion about the 16 Ohm
Conversions To my 8 Ohm 604’s.
Also do you really think they will need to be? ReMagged? That would add around 500$
To my cost just for Shipping!

Yeah it’s 60-65$ per 604 one way for me to ship to GPA. I’m sure to Cali would be close to what JBLBob is saying. It’s the shipping that is killer.

Hi Bob,

Not sure which carrier you are getting shipping quotes from on your end? But check out FedEx Ground service. Generally a VERY competitive price and much better than most. Good luck.

Thanks for the Tip on Fed Ex. Being that I stepped back into Over the Road 18
Wheel driving, I’m boycotting Fed Ex as well as Amazon. Amazon doesn’t treat Truckers well with their strict appointment times, and wait times and delays.
The most unhappy people working there.
Ask any trucker what he thinks about Fed Ex drivers? Always speeding pulling
Doubles, Lots of Wrecks'. No thanks. I prefer USPS for around 10-15% more than fedex

The 416 8c gets no love . However , they are great speakers for the Model 19. When I found my set of 19's one had the expected 416 8b the other 416 8c. Got the guy to knock off a few more $$$ because of it. He said they were his fathers and never even thought to look. They just sounded great. Once I got them home, I recapped them and found an original 416 8b and put it in. Guess what could not hear a difference.
416 8c go for quite a bit less. mount exactly like the 8b's. I know deep down there has to be a sonic difference, but it must be trivial at best.

Interesting
I have the chance to swap a pair of Jbl 2215’s for a pair of 416 8c
But was hesitant due to the non Alnico version but if you can’t tell the difference?
Hmmm

If i had a model 19 and it needed woofers. I would go with the 416 8c over a jbl . Not that the jbl is not a great speaker in the right application.
But not for an Altec design.
