How big are the cabinets roughly? Is it difficult to recap the external crossovers or is it not worth attempting myself. Any comparisons to the sound quality?

Mine are 22" D (including Crossover) x 23 1/4 W x 30T
For me, they are very well balanced. I like them with all sorts of music, they are forgiving (unlike my Bev stats).

Thanks for the reply. Your set look like they're in better condition. I'm going to make the drive tomorrow morning to check these out. They were used in a studio for most of their life. I'm going to try to take out the drivers and take a look at them to make sure they're correct and test them with my multimeter. If everything looks good and they don't sound distorted etc, I'll buy them.
Then I'm probably going to work on repainting them and maybe recapping the external crossovers if it's not too complicated.
Do you have any stands you're using them with? Everything I've read says it's best to get them to close to ear level or at least tilt them up.

Mine are on Furn dollies, gets them up close to 5 "'s. Yea probably could get them up a bit higher, closer to ear level.
But then they do loose a bit of Bass support from the floor.
If there's one slight weakness in them at least compared to my JBL's is that the extreme bottom end is a little shy.
Obviously they solved that with the Super big Reds with the huge cabinet and helper woofer.
I have a pair of JBL LE15's in different cabinets that I will use to do the heavy lifting.
But then they do loose a bit of Bass support from the floor.

Although mine are not raised, they should be. I have two other sets of speakers in the room, so I tend to use my 6' Bev stats for critical listening, but I very much like the Atlecs as well.
They are covered in a red vinyl material, so it will take some effort to remove it, then you can apply whatever finish to them. Mine were also from a studio, but left there around the late 80's (guessing) and I don't think were really ever used after that period. Since they are in pretty good condition, I have left them original, including the crossovers.

A bit of low frequency boost to the auxilliary Utah 15" is really the ticket.
Wow I love the look of your super big reds. Did you do the veneer yourself? Looks gorgeous
That's fair, I cant really afford the physical real estate in my apartment for 6' stats so these big reds will have to do. Depending on how bad the paint job is, (which judging from the color ain't great) I'll probably have to figure out a way to strip off the vinyl layer, then sand and paint or maybe veneer, although that might be a bit beyond my abilities.
I think they are solid oak and this is the way I got them from the recording studio.
Well I picked them up today and finally got them home and am able to listen to them. Wow!! The soundstage and detail is incredible.
They were originally used in the 70s at longmeadow farm in western mass. It was a studio that catered to some very high profile muscions such as the stones and many others. It was a fully operating farm as well as a kind of retreat/studio. I bought them from a guy who interned there in the 70s and later brought the speakers to another studio where he's been using them since. They sound incredible but I still have to take readings on the drivers. Thanks again for all the information guys!

I just found this thread by accident and thought I would throw in my version of the 16 ohm drivers. Mine are original red textured arborite with the ML xovers. The radio station I worked at in the 80's were ready to push them into the dumpster along with a dozen ATR-102s and a bunch of other bulky items, thankfully I worked in the engineering dept. and convinced the manager to give me a few days to get it all off the loading dock and into storage.

Looks like my set, just with handles and wheels.
I used to lug these things around in the back of the van to remotes for the radio station, if only I knew back then what they were.
