Amazon and Walmart play games with pricing

the skipper

Professional Curmudgeon
I bought this birdseed, twice, from Amazon. For the first two orders (for two bags each) it about $20 for a 20 pound bag. When I went to re-order the the third time, all of a sudden it jumped up to $30/bag.

When Amazon did this. I tried Walmart. For the first two orders (for two bags each) it about $20 for a 20 pound bag. When I went to re-order the the third time, all of a sudden it jumped up to $30/bag.

Both Amazon and Walmart did this. Is this a thing nowadays?

Now, I'm trying Chewy's where it's a little under $20.. Let's see what happens here.

Mine came Federal Express from out of state. Might have been Kentucky. Maybe they use the same source.

You pay 20.00 for a 20 pound bag ?
Why not buy a 40 pound bag and get a better deal ?
Are the bags 100 percent sunflower ? That’s all you should buy anyway.
I bought 10 bags of 40 lb sunflower from
Walmart. Online. Paid 17 per bag.
They made a mistake and sent me two more. I called to offer payment, they said don’t worry about it.
You got robbed.

Our birds are spoiled and love this stuff and I can't find it in 40 lb bags.

If that's what they're really doing (referencing a user's history to set their price), that really sucks. I wouldn't put it past either organization. I wonder if their algorithm realizes when someone doesn't buy and goes to shop elsewhere. I've experienced higher prices from subsequent searches (on Amazon) as well, but nothing so obvious as yours.

I've never paid attention, just always buy what I need or want..
Time to start paying attention.. damn them.. and shame on me.. :whip:

Years ago I’d buy the mixed blend. And 70 percent would fall on the ground . The doves would peck at the cracked corn but most of it was wasted. But you’re in the South. As long as they eat it I say , then it works for you. I only brought it up because those that carry bird food by the bulk around here , like Agway sell big bags. Even 50 lbs. But I’ve got 6 feeders. And one for the chipmunks. There is one coming out of the feeder

Mine came from
Indiana. I have no idea how they made a profit on my order.

I use Keepa.com to keep buying at the price I want to pay. Sick of zon flipping prices every which way. For consumables like bird sead, stay a sack ahead so the little guys never run out while waiting for the Amazon price to normalize.

This isn't new. Airline and other travel sites use your search history to raise the lowest offered price every time you check on the current prices. As far as business is concerned, that's the whole point of "cookies" innit?

May be a case of the other retailer running out of product at the lower price after the first one. Or yes, it could be something more nefarious. I usually try to feed the birds around here during the winter when natural food is scarce. I give them peanuts crumbled into smaller pieces so they all can enjoy. No mess of hulls and shells to worry about. So far from Amazon the price has remained constant.

Skip ... maybe it's simply that this item was gettin' scarce (read: inventory runnin' low) that the price quoted was up?

Anyway, I popped over to Bid "A" just now and the Southern Regional Blend CRACK on which yer birdies are hooked (pusherman!) is, like, um, out o' stock, but even before it ran out the quoted price for me, a non-Amazon "regular" (no account -- hey that phrase is open to interpretation - and no cookies @ Tor browser, etc.) is from $33.70. But don' matter cuz Wagner's 20-lb Southern Blend is out of stock:

Over here I give the birds baguette crumbs and they seem very satsified. Cost ~ Euro 20 cents a week. Just sayin' ....

PS: best o luck in gettin' yer seed situation sorted, son.

^^ Comment: fuk all ... but Amazon's opening and subsequent "pages" have become effin' (visually) noisy. I haven't peeked inside that joint in a long (long) time... and I'm dang(ed) glad I don' frequent that "e" space.

Actually, I called Wal Mart yesterday and talked to a nice CS rep. I had the item on my screen with the $30 price and she looked up the same item. Her price showed less than $20. She offered me a $25 credit on a new order but I politely declined. Now, we'll see if Chewy's pulls the same crap but i've heard nothing but good things about them from more than a few people.

I ordered this on saturday and it arrived yeserday.
