Amber amp and pre-amp

Amber Series 70 amp and Model 17 pre-amp. $200 seems a bit high but I know it was great gear back in the day. Anyone have an opinion and/or experience with them?

I bought one of their amps when I had to send my Crown D150 back for a warranty issue. I was glad to get the Crown back. I only bought the Amber because they were made in my hometown. Didn't like the sound. Sold it to my boss to use with his JBL L65s. One day the Amber caught fire. Damn glad I didn't still own it.

Yeah really, that's too bad because they're quite pretty and (looking at other pictures) are physically built quite well.

Seems like a decent price as similar vintage B&K combo (ST-140/CS-115) might be close to double that.

The amp alone is worth more than $200. The preamp usually sells for $150+. Price is extremely reasonable.

J. Gordon Holt reviewed the Amber 70 amp, and liked it very much. In fact, it was listed in the Recommended Components section of Stereophile, as a high Class C rated amp. I still use an Amber 70 amp, on a daily basis. It drives my AR-90's well enough for me. I own 2 of the amps, an Amber preamp, and an Amber tuner. I don't use the preamp any longer, as it need's recapping. But, it does have a very nice sounding phono section.

Amber is actually still in business, but no longer in the U.S. Keith sold Amber years ago to an Australian firm, where it's still manufactured:

Amber amps had a good reputation, but like all things vintage, figure on it needing some refurbishment and going over. Might make a nice project though and I know you need more projects, right? :scratch2:
