Anyone watch this show on the History Channel? I thought I would love it, but I'm not sure after watching my first episode. I'll chime in later, what do you all think? Yeah, it's really "Pickers".

I watched 10 minutes of a show and it confirmed what I knew. Its people like that I cannot stand. They care about one thing. Money.

I watched it and all I could think is this will ruin it for anybody else that does this. Now everybody will think that thier crap is worth a lot. Othe than that, it was enjoyable as entertainment.

American Pickers

DVR'ed it, haven't watched it yet.

Don't worry about it affecting prices.

Most people already think their stuff is worth a fortune!

For some reason, the advertisements rubbed me the wrong way, and this is on my list of shows I'll avoid. I find myself wondering two things:

1) Why is the History Channel trying to turn itself into a reality TV channel? They're working their way out of my rotation..

2) Is there any profession that won't show up in a reality TV show? Grocery shopping anyone? Parallel parking? Sheesh...

bs

I'm kind of leery to watch it too. I saw about a minute of it the other day...... unless it was just a commercial. What I don't get is they seemed to make a big deal over the name "pickers", like a "picker" was a name of a real job title, like plumber, carpenter, or janitor. I've never heard it before........ any of you? I think it's just a made up name for the show. I've always called those guys antique dealers, or just dealers...... because they're buying to sell, not to collect.

I also think the History Channel is going downhill.

I have not seen this yet, got it DVR'd, but I'm getting a little sick of the job related reality shows. It seems if you live in Alaska and have a pulse you have a real shot at having you're own show. That said I do like Pawn Stars and do find in educational.

I have not seen this show because the History channel has already worked its way out of my viewing time. Ice Road truckers?? :thumbsdn: :bash:

I saw one episode. They were in some older mans barns climbing all over stuff and pulled a few things out including a crank from a early Harley bicycle. The thing that the show does not cover is their cost to drive that Mercedes van all over the state to pick up a few items that may be worth a couple thousand in proffit. Then the overhead to find a buyer for those items. Are they really making a killing?...... I think not.

Praying on the elderly is all it is. Camera is in their face, what are they suppose to do.

The amusement guy had it right, they asked a price, he said $10,000.

What got me was them giving him nothing for a sword he brought back from WW2. No scruples.

I loved it. Wish I could do that for a living. I don't think they were preying on anyone. Pretty easy to say no to someone knocking at the front door.

Amen Bro!!!

A lot of folks rag on flippers and scroungers, but this stuff isn't sitting out on the front porch when they get up Saturday morning... Perhaps if they spent a day driving all over creation to thrifts, estate and garage sales they'd realize there's a gazillion Beanie babies, wicker baskets and Herb Alpert LPS for every set of Advents or clean turntable found.

My wife watched it and liked it, but I just saw the promos while watching "Pawn Stars" for the first time before it. I was lukewarm to PS. Loved the putz (Chumley??) who busted up the display case with the ball and chain though...

Well I watched the first 2 episodes that I had DVR'ed.

It doesn't seem to me that they are really taking advantage of anyone. Most of this stuff, although some of it is really neat, would probably sit and rot or rust until it was just a pile of crap. It didn't seem that most of the people that they bought stuff from was going to do anything with any of it.

I saw an interesting combination of things that I thought were bought pretty cheaply and other things that seem to be pretty high for what they were.

The 5-car kiddie carnival ride that they bought for $1500 was probably pretty well bought, but it had been there since 1992 and would have most probably just rusted down to the ground otherwise.

Like it was said before, these guys have to make a profit, pay for the expense of running that Mercedes van around and pay the girl back at the office. I have to say as a business owner myself, the "cost of doing business" is pretty high. They have at least 3 people being paid and all of the other business costs as well such as insurance and rent.

I found it to be pretty entertaining. Isn't this just the industrial strength version of going to yard sales on the weekends?

And as far as this making people think that all of their old junk is valuable, I think several of the old guys that I saw on this show already have a pretty healthy opinion of what their stuff is worth!

The more I think about this, when we shop Yard Sales and Garage Sales, we're all "Pickers". We are looking to buy something that we consider desirable from someone that either doesn't want it or need it anymore. We expect to buy it cheap and most times, we do. We end up paying them what they think its worth or at a minimum, what they think is the most they can get for it.

Everyone pretty much pointed out the obvious staged and non-realistic format. One thing I noticed was the storage facility was clean and empty. Where is all the stuff that is not selling ?

Haven't watched it yet, but I still don't understand the hostility towards dealers that pops up around here. Yeah, some are unscrupulous - but that's true of any profession. I have to applaud the good dealers for rescuing interesting items from rusty oblivion and moving them along to people who want the stuff. Everyone has to eat, so I don't have a problem with them making money doing it.

If you were the "old guy" with a barn full of "stuff", would you rather get some quick cash for it, or have it become part of an estate sale?

As I have watched another episode or two, I have grown to like these guys a little more. They seem to treat people fairly, and seem like the kind of guys I would enjoy talking to.

Anyone else have opinions now that more shows have aired?

No comment on making a tv show about it, but pickers have been around for a long while.
At least as long, as there has been things worth collecting.
A good picker will already have buyers for certain things, and most buyers always have a set price for the things they want or at least offer 50% of what they think they can get.
Going in all willy-nilly like, with a bottomless purse, just purely on speculation, is idiotic at best.
They know what they're doing.

I've been and will continue to be on both sides of this fence.
The biggest difference between today and, the proverbial days of yesteryear, is the Internet and its' inherant advantages/disadvantages.

Just sayin'

Regards,
John.
