American Pickers

I met Mike in Nashville, he really is as nice a guy as he appears on the show. He could do that. Show by himself and it would be just as, if not more successful. Frank seems like a weasel.

That would make Mike guilty by association, as they are business partners

The show skips over 98% of their bread and butter, and concentrates of the little fluff that they spend little money on, but the stuff they can lecture on and obsess over for hours. It makes for a more interesting and sympathetic show, which gladdens the History Channel.

In order to pay three full time professional salaries, plus insurance, plus cover their road costs, they have to be pulling down a couple grand a day. A lot of the show is theater, as their best day of buying would be their worst day on a nontelevised "real" day.

I'm sure they have a tractor trailer with a tommy gate picking up their real buys on a contracted basis, as the stuff they buy on the show would not cover the cost of any of their real expenses or salaries.

It's worth noting that prior to the show (which Mike created, the history of how it came about is rather interesting), neither Danni or Frank were part of the equation. Danni was brought in because they needed a "home base" person and some eye candy, and Frank was brought in because while trying to develop it as a TV show, they realized that Mike needed a foil while on the road and talking to sellers. Both were old friends of Mike's, but not part of the business.

Danni likely was a VERY beautiful woman-In the classical "Ruebenesque" sort of way. She looks to be a BIG gal, & shows that a gal need NOT be a tiny waif to be pretty & desirable. The one thing I kinda fault her on is she has a FEW more Tats than I find attractive. To me, tats should COMPLIMENT & complete the person, but NOT scream & shout it. Another problem w/tats is that I've NEVER seen one on a person with a bit of age that wasn't all muddy & faded out looking. That's just my opinion, others may feel different.

I'd rather mine revolved around audio than those two idiots' show.

And why would they be idiots pray tell? I guess because they are successful and make a nice living doing something they love? :scratch2: Yeah, a couple of real idiots.

Something I'd love to see them do a DVD release of sometime are the home videos Mike made as he got the idea of making a TV series out of his picking adventures.

I watch the show once in awhile, but I get tired of it pretty quickly. You can only see so many sign and gas pump purchases.:sigh:

Only see this when one of us is hospitalized or at a friends place with cable. Occasionally interesting, my bud records the interesting bits for us to see during visits.

I like the show and I like the characters on the show. I don't understand some of the absurd values for the auto/bike purchases. Like paying $30k for a rusty, barely recognizable Indian motor that maybe two people in the world might be willing to fork over 1.5x that amount for a restoration. But otherwise I like the show. Some of the people they pick are creeeeeeeepy, tho....

The pre-WWII motorcycle collector's world is a land of mega-bucks. Pre-WWI, even more so. The TV station now called Velocity, which was Discovery's original HD-only channel, has a show centered around motorcycle barn finds. It takes big money to play in that sandbox, and I think you'd be surprised at the size of the market.

Bought a sad basket case 1906 Reading Standard when I was a teen for $12, 1963-ish. Dunno where it is now, let it go 1972.

My family were pickers long before the History channel made picking mainstream. We learned as kids to rush down the flea market tables long before they were dealers, when they were just individuals bring their stuff to get rid of. We would taught what was good, from old glassware, to gold and silver in the jewelry boxes. Always on the hunt for antiques at garage sales.

Or years digging old dumps, home sites, outhouses, going in old barns anything to find things of value. Or pay a home owner to let us bring in a backhoe to dig up their back yard to get all the old bottles, of course we would back fill the hole. My uncle had old homestead topographical maps that we would use and take the four wheel truck in the mountains of CA. and find what were once old home sites and find where they threw their trash in some gully back in the 1800's. Finding old antique bottles, is like find gold in them hills!

Ken- That sounds like you had a great time and great memories. I would have fit right in with your family. :thmbsp:

Actually, I don't think they are. Frank picks his own stuff, for his own store with his own money.
I've seen every episode of this show, and have seen many times a person give Frank a very very low price on something and he still dickers, where Mike would just shake hands. That's what I base my opinion. Mike just seems more genuine.
