Amp Killers!

Here's a good test.

Listen to the CD Tales of Mystery and
Imagination

The Alan Parsons Project.

Track 6 Prelude, set at 95 db.

Make sure all is set flat.

Get ready at the end of Prelude to transition to Arrival and see if you
have arrived. ;-)"

(Disclaimer)

I take no responsibility for what may occur.

I just did it and passed the test but I'm running 8 ohm DM6's which are not on the same level as some of the great
4 ohm Infinities.

My little 4 0hm RS6-B's 1st killed a Pioneer SX-626, then a SX-828 and finally my SX-950.
They also killed a Luxman R-106 which is granted, not a super speaker driving unit.
The only thing these haven't (yet) killed are a Luxman R-1120 and a Denon 1309R integrated.

What music?
What volume?
What bass and loudness settings?

Seems odd, I've never heard anyone say RS6 are amp killers.
But maybe they are.

The original CD release, (which is what I believe your jacket is from)
or the Original recording, released as a MoFi Cd which is the original mix, (the aboveforesed cd had all kinds of 80's effects spliced into it by Parsons, so it's a total creature of the eighties, totally different quality as well, the MoFi is demonstrably superior in every way.

Either way, Now that you've played the Tales of Mystery and Imagination card, I'm going to go listen to both versions for that door open (I suspect you are referencing) it was always a most awesome event on every system I've ever played it on, (and that obviously means every system I've ever owned from the lowest to the current.)
I first found this cassette at a Skags discount bin when 'Eye in the Sky' was the latest album, and I was searching for that, but since it said Edgar Allen Poe, (my absolute favorite poet, and story author) I had to have it.

It was in our desert fort, ( we'd dug down in the dirt about the width of two flats, and four and a half feet down, a couple of plywood flats, and we had a underground fort!) where i finally played side two of the cassette, I was raised as a classical pianist, so had no interest in listening to any form of classical music at this stage. It's just this section you're referring is what finally got me to listen to the rest of the piece, and it's been a top favorite of mine ever since.
I have it on cassette, LP, LP CD, CD, CD. If it's ever relased in a higher resolution format I'll buy it yet again.

sorry, its seriously one of my absolute favorite albums ever, EVER. Back in the 'Boom Boom' era of mini trucks and the sort, the heartbeat from 'Tell Tale Heart' was my demonstration piece.(That'd be the original cd, which is the 80's re-edit) MoFi didn't come out on CD 'til the nineties iirc.

Damn.....you guys are tripping me out. That’s one of the first albums I bought as a kid. Thus quote the raven never more is forever a melody in my head. I had no idea about this other stuff. I’m going to buy that album again tomorrow at zia if they have it.

LOL. While I don't have any of these speakers I have several amps that would run them just fine so there is no whining/complaining here. Simply stating facts about a pretty lame impedance rating on those speakers.

Heck, one pair of amps I have is rated for 1300 watts each, continuous, into 1 ohm load. Probably light those Kappas on fire if I really wanted to. ;)

I tend towards viewing the Kappa 9 as a poorly designed speaker. No speaker should be released with seemingly benign specifications yet can only adequately be powered by a handful of consumer amplifiers. What's interesting is that some seem to think that the ability to kill an amp ought be a point of pride.

What if it was a lamp instead of an amp killed.

Yes, it is like stating a specifying a lamp for max 100 watts bulb, but in reality it is 25 watts if using safely.. You put in the 100watts bulb, and the plastic or wood outside catches fire and lamp burns itself (and maybe the house, too).

You Stupid Consumer, you should have known this 100 watts lamp is not to be used in conjunction with a 100 watts bulb.
Because although your lamp or house is burnt you should have consulted the lampophiles community first since it is a well known highly regarded designer super duper lamp.

Your sort of consumer should not be entitled to use this kind of lamp.
.

I have run my infinity quantum kappa 8 speakers for over a year with my marantz 2230, 2238b, akai am2350 and pioneer sx 650.
I simply desoldered one leg of the 12.5 mh coil from the woofer circuit.
No longer an amp killer....
Great sound, what more do you want?

That's cheating.

I am waiting to get amp 2 from California. It's a McIntosh MC2500 (MC2500X2 =1000W each strapped mono). I bought it for my Kappa 8's and should be something very special. Can't wait.

Wow .. Very suprising "okie" ((((( 65 wpc and the k9 sounds great )))) ( At low ish volume )

Between that and the current Ren 90 thread with op running them with same amp I use on my K6.1 ( Adcom 545 ) and im really confused ( Head Scratch )
Then a pair of Rs 6bs Murders 4 amps ( And gets away with it ) LOL
BTW Bahamayellow .. Your K9s sound Great with that piece of music ! And I only heard through my laptop .. Have to play that through my K6.1 so I can hear what the K9 really sounds like !! Haa

You learn something new every day - I have this very copy as well. It's been a while since I listened to it. I do not have the MFSL CD however ... At least not yet! Track 6 was my fave demo track in my 84 mustang GT BITD - 29 speakers including a pair of Kicker C18s and 2,200 watts - we built it in '89.

Who wants to bring their 9s over to see how loud they get with bridged MC2600s flashing the power guard lamps? We can put 25A fuses inline if that makes you feel better ... ;)
They play so loud you that you won't be able to stay in the same room or even the house while they are playing, I tried it with two adcom GFA 565 monoblocks driving my K 9's and a bunch of my neighbors from blocks away came to my house because they were so loud, that was the only time I pushed my K 9's to see what they were capable of, it was loud.

Lol. I would be ringing your doorbell the next day. I love my Kappa 8's and am sure my 2500's would bury 9's too.
