And the winner is ...............................

So, feedback so far certainly suggests that the 7900 though terrific, both professional and definition series are superior. With that said and taking out the "looks Impressive" factor. Which unit would be the cold dead hands its going in the coffin piece. Ideally all of your experience should help narrow down to one or two must have units.

thanks again for providing your thoughts and wisdom

Where is avionic to help you out?
All this gear sounds different find the sonic signature you enjoy and dive in.

I should have elaborated. I bought my first Sansui at Musicraft a new 771 in '75 with a pair of ESS AMT 1's. The next year a new 881. Here's some of the Sansui gear I owned/still own over the years . . .

1000x
2000x
4000
771
881
AU 710/TU 710
AU 717/TU717

I only have the 9900, but it is addicting compared to to my other gear. I’m in the same boat as you, doing a lot of lower volume listening, and not having the loudness switch is not optimal. My solution is to us an external equalizer. Gives me lots of options compared to the tone controls, and I can create a fantastic sound with the 9900 in my listening space. Couple an AU 9900/11000/20000 with a TU 9900, and you have one sweet system!

I've had an AU770, AU9900, CA2000, and AU20000 (among many others, but focusing on the 'definition series')... When all restored, I felt the AU20000 has a significant upgrade in the preamp section (vs the AU9900/CA2000 which are basically same preamp) and the extra power you get with the 20k is another plus...

The 20Ks do carry a premium over the others mentioned, and it comes with its fair share of problems that need to be addressed during restoration, but when restored correctly I do feel it's worth the extra money, since it'd likely find a permanent place in your rotation/setup and will hold its value

A note on not having a loudness button... While I usually dont use the loudness buttons anyways, and almost always keep tone controls flat, one thing I did do on these series was adjust the tone controls to 'simulate' a loudness button effect, then just use the tone defeat button as my on/off loudness button... Just an idea if you dont find yourself using tone controls that often

Was your 9900 restored?

I would just keep the 7900 & be satisfied

I have an AU-7700 and have thought about getting one of the bigger amps. But these days they cost a premium, for IMO marginally better sound; those amps were all from the same generation so will sound similar. I am quite happy with the AU-7700, it's more than powerful enough & it has the loudness switches for low vol listening

unless you need more power for inefficient speakers. or want bragging rights etc

can you find a way to audition some of them & see for yourself?

My recently acquired AU-7700 is the best piece of vintage gear that I have ever heard.
I am looking for someone to restore it without changing it's sonic signature, for now, I am throughly enjoying it!
