Another Busted Marantz 2600

Sam, I can't believe you are letting a local one like this get away. Do you already have doubles?

Hello Folks,

Sam is most likely wary of the reparability of said piece, hence the warning. You would have to ask plenty of questions on its operation prior to failure to determine causes and available replacements. There is a scope tube available on the same venue and the possibility of the toroidal repair was discussed HERE on the last parts unit.

Regards,
TB

For fixers, I like quick and easy repairs.

I knew you had a few and I agree with the quick and easy, along with cheap. If its just the PS board that would be fine, but messing with the toroidal could be messy.

I'd like to get a 2600, but those two 2500's on there has been tempting me.

TB

TB, aside from the 50 extra watts in the 2600, they are essentially the same receiver. The 2500 does have a utility grade power cord which was dropped on the 2600. The 2600 added quartz locking, which IMO is a worthwhile improvement. Both sound the same.

Based on my experiences years ago with a 2500 and a pair of AR9's, I would never buy into a 2500/2600 again ever at almost any price. This was the weakest and most anemic high power receiver I have ever owned. Not to mention it did not sound that good. The scope was fun to watch after a few hand-rolled cigs though. :sigh:

That 2600 is pretty ratty looking for such a high final price. Where's the faceplate bolts? Lots of dust and crap inside the fan too. It's a pain to clean out the heatsink on these. Maybe the winner thought that DLB decoder was worth $2100.

The AR9 is a pretender of an audiophile speaker that can make ANY amplifier sound bad. Gimmicky with opposing and side firing woofers forcing the bass to make a 90 degree reflection BEFORE reaching your ears. Phase errors are inevitable. I would submit the AR9 is the weak link in your old system.

Good points Sam, however I also did not feel it was much with the pair of Infinity Quantum 5's I had back then as well. Or the Bose 901 series III's I once had. the thing just did not make my feet tap.

The AR9's did a good boogie with a kit-built Hafler DH500 though.

I can light up a Luxman R117 these days and the foot taps, or my G22K into a pair of a/d/s/ L-910 series II. I can't explain exactly why, however the 2500 just never made me want to like it.

Hi Paul, I know this is almost two years later :D I just couldn't resist. Anyway, I have a 2500 that I just got back from being rebuilt, and the last thing it is, is anemic or weak. Perhaps something was wrong with yours that was never addressed or fixed? Mine can make the whole house shake like a Tsunami with even a pair of moderate sized 12 inch three ways, such as my LS-408B Kenwoods. With my hulking Model Sevens it makes alot more than just my feet tap. Next speakers in line are going to be my HD880's. I'm anxious to try those because those were made for the 2500.

Just sayin'.....:)

Anything will make those Kenwoods jump. They are fairly high efficiency. I'll stand by every word I said. The 2500 I had was 2 years old when I got it, and I remember selling it for $300 not long after. Sorry 2500 fans, for me it was good riddance to bad garbage. :thmbsp:

The beauty of audio is there's enough out there for us all to like, me I could never warm up to that big Marantz doorstop. If you like it, that where it is at!
Enjoy!

Best,

Paul
