I spoke to that guy on those today after he lowered the price again...and to see if i could talk myself to go down there and get them. We even talked about meeting 1/2 way. He wants someone to come get them at his place, won't ship either. Understandable. Decided I did not need another upgrade project and would likely replace/redo most everything which leaves a pair of heils and cabinets. There was a time just a few years ago I'd pay that amount just for nice cabinets or nice heils.

If you are interested, I believe Parts Express is/was having a sale on these diaphragms. I don't recall if they were ESS or after market. They may still have them.

I just did.
I swapped 4, 2 in AMT Bookshelf and 2 in Amt 1b.
I think with time they get quieter. Anyway for sure the new ones sounds better.

That's an oustanding price, at least up here it would be. I just paid more than that for totally original ones in need of a full restore..Rock Monitors are cool!
A local offering for three bills. Completely restored/refoamed. Just don't want to make the drive across LA.

There's a Craigslist ad for a pair in a pawn shop in Kent. Are those the ones you picked up? They looked in good shape in the ad.

nope I saw those but I bought a pair from a private seller, a couple hours after he listed them. He got them at an estate sale. They're completely original, including the completely disintegrated surrounds on all of the drivers

Looking way back over old threads back to mid 2000s, I keep looking, do you know if anyone here or otherwise has come up with a great new 3-way crossover design you like incorporating new and different non-ESS woofers/midrange drivers with the big Heil?

I saw AM kinda went back to the stock x-over, and I've seen posts by folks who popped in with photos and disappeared but no details shared. I've been kinda looking at it again, but want to find someone who is really excited about their results. I'm super happy with my 2.5 setup, but I want to go back and make a great 3-way. I've passed on a number of AMT3s because i plan to buy all new drivers, with an all new crossover, and a slightly different cabinet design. Right now I'm playing my DEC-AMT28s with a 10w triode tube amp, it sounds amazing but the dual mid-woofers a tad larger. I saw an old post from AM talking about the PS 1220s along side his AMT3s, and I'm prepared to buy some really good Scan Speak woofers/mids, but want to combine it with the right subwoofer like the old ESS AMT monitor had with the eclipse elec crossover, but want a good passive x-over.

It's hard to find anything beyond the theoretical, with any empirical testing or track record to speak of. I can only cite the work of Ralph Helmer and his design of the Surreal Sound Fifth Row speakers. He uses a Tangband full range driver for midrange that has only a 1st order low pass filter (.15 mH coil with a 4 ohm bypass resistor) and a 1st order high-pass filter (6.8 uF for his 8 ohm Heil, double that for a 4 ohm Heil) for the Heil. His woofers utilize an active low-pass crossover built into the Crown amps that came with the package. I'm sure he worked with the belief that less is more regarding passive crossover components.
@essNeff is running a 3-way with an active crossover, but I'm not sure his settings will translate well over into a passive crossover.
I suppose the only way one could be truly happy is to buck up for the test equipment, build a crossover on a breadboard and spend the time measuring and listening.
Okay, kind of what I was pondering to a degree but not with the confidence and time needed to do it correctly. I like the idea of working to emulate what essNeff and others have sorted out with their electronic crossovers. I have studied Ralph's setup a bit however I'd prefer going with fewer / more efficient woofer drivers - probably easier said than done and probably why not too many have claimed to actually master a good 3-way with a passive crossover with the big Heil yet. After I gave up failing multiple times, for my current DEC-AMT28 build I was fortunate enough to work up a very basic design and a friend of a colleague (now retired, not available any more) helped me update an re-design and build my current crossovers with testing inside an Anechoic chamber. I feel lucky for that, and it was expensive to do. It would be interesting to speak with Ralph to see if a more simplified 3-way driver layout could be applied based on his prior testing results and such. Thanks.
