Couldn't resist.

Saw a posting for some 1969 pre-Kabuki Sansui SP-300 speakers on CL this morning. 3-way, 4-driver speaker (12" woof, horn meower, two horn tweets... all Alnico made by Coral). Big bastards, too. 30x18x18" (+/-), and they weigh about 75 lbs each.

$40. After I clean 'em up and re-cap 'em, these will either go to my son-in-law, or I'll try and flip 'em for local pick-up.

I think you're missing a perfect opportunity to present these as THE valentine gift (just say these are this year's expression of sound love) :music:
 
How much power do you think it will take the drive the things? They are huge, efficiency regardless, the drivers have to move a rediculously large mass with speakers that big.
 
I like those older kabuki's. That huge port does look like an after thought. You think it's original? :thmbsp: :scratch2:
 
I know that port is stock but WOW it looks way to big and short to work. I had some minty SP-3000's and found them very mediocre and kinda shouty.

By the time Sansui went to four digits, they apparently were making their own drivers, and their design philosophy changed to a more "forward", mid-peak sound.

We'll see.

They are rated at 50 watts, so it isn't going to take much power.
 
I like those cabinets on those old kabukis. The quality of the drivers never ceases to amaze me. The wiring seems heavy duty and the crossover looks like a quality piece. They're very easy to drive also. How they can have less than stellar sound is still a mystery to me though. Beautiful pieces of furniture but they're not much to listen to for sure. I have a older pair of pioneer kabukis that I'm going to try using modern drivers in. The cabinets are nice but the sound that comes out; yikes run for the hills.

I found the factory rating.

104 dB/W. Seems pretty efficient. This sounds like another job for the T-Amp! :banana:
 
Actually the CORAL Alnico driver can be made to sound quite good.
I picked up three pair of Electra (Coral-made) drivers: 8", 5", & 3".
Made a nice cab out of MDF (braced and insulated), with a vertical array.
You'll notice those old Coral & Sansui multi-driver systems, have speakers placed everywhere......like darts on a dart-board.....who designed those speakers.....Charlie Chan??
Made a 3-way, 1st-order crossover (300hz/4500hz), with variable L-pads for the midrange and tweeters.
Used with a tube amp, or low-powered, warm-sounding solid state amp; they are VERY efficient and quite dynamic!!

Drug 'em in tonight and hooked the mighty T-Amp to 'em. I don't think they were kidding about the 104 dB/W output! Gee, they sound like horns. ;-)

Interesting sounding, but I can tell they need a re-cap. PLENTY of bass. I'll crack 'em and read the values. I'll start cleaning/oiling the cabs this weekend and order the caps Saturday.

I have a pair of late 60's/early 70's Coral BX-801's.
3-way ported; with 8", 4", and 3" alnico paper cone drivers.
They are very well made and extremely efficient (approx. 100db).
Frequency rated as: 40-20Khz.
Very dynamic sounding, with a very forward mid-range.
A Japanese version of a JBL-L100.
I've used Coral Alnico drivers in DIY speaker projects.
The drivers themselves are first-rate....and do make great project speakers.
They sound ideal with tube amps, and warm-sounding, low-powered SS amps.
