Update on my KLH 6’s restore: Okay, I’m convinced! I decided to rip out the grille cloth on these pristine 6’s.
I realized after the several encouraging comments, that the sealed characteristic of the acoustic suspension speaker is fundamental to its design; and there are countless examples in this forum of the sealant dissipating over the years. Restoring to an air sealed box now seems more important than preserving the original frameless grille and cloth, even if they do sound damn good right now!
Not to mention, I’ve also been curious as hell to see the fronts of these drivers! Indeed the surround sealant is gone, surrounds are leaky as a sieve. Otherwise I continue to be amazed at how well preserved these speakers are, like they’ve been through a time warp! More photos attached.
Is the sealer from Vintage AR still the consensus on KLH 6 surround sealer?
Also, I would like to locate a grille cloth fabric matching the original if possible, if anyone has any sources? (I’m also on the lookout on fleabay for original grilles.) I am familiar with the Irish linen (18 ct) options, as that is what I used when I rebuilt the grilles for both my AR 4x’s and KLH 17’s. I really liked the result for these, but I’d prefer something closer to the original cloth of the early KLH 6 if I can find it, e.g., I measure it to be about 12 ct and it’s much coarser than the Irish linen. Thanks.
