I bought this Niles speaker switcher thing a while ago so that I wouldn't blow up my Marantz 2270 receiver by running two sets of 6 ohm speakers together. It has a "protection" button which when engaged prevents the speaker pair from drawing too much power. I was told this when I got the thing, but it's definitely true that with that switch engaged there is a pretty noticeable bass drop... OK, because I don't run both sets of speaker together all that often, but not ideal.
Now I see that there's an Adcom speaker switcher for sale on my local CL which the ad claims to not drop out any bass with the protection speaker engaged... I figure that in order to decrease the load on the amp that there must be some penalty. Does this Adcom thing just make the overall volume go down by a few dbs? Is it possible to have the protection thing happening without any kind of discernible penalty to the sound quality?
