I appreciate the positive waves, guys! But all I did was pick a simple, free design and slap a breadboard together. It sounds great and I just wanted to share. My CNC board arrived and I am very pleased with the quality! Time to build it and figure out which battery route I want to go.

Big credit to the guy that took a good idea and made it happen for other folks!

Board's here, Thank You!! With the Bugle knock-off I accidentally committed on e-Place that makes, what, 4 different chip-based MM pre's in the house waiting my attention now?
BTW, the Toad-ified 640P sounds just great with the O'fon MC-3 HOMC riding a mod'ed Souther SLA-3 on a Denon DP-55K. Sorely tempted to put back a DL-301-II LOMC while they are still at Comet.

Not sure yet, may couple it with the preamp line stage kit I've been making strain gauge preamps from and build a mini pre/system controller with it and some RatShak items. It may also get the moving coil front end option when we get that going.
It's on the list, I've got other projects waiting ahead of it right now.

I'm thinking a nice Cherry or Walnut box... Im working out how I want to do the RCA's.. gold plated, etc... but still sketchy on how I could mount them into a wood case... several options, not sure what the best way to go is.. i want this to be very clean.

BTW Digikey components minus the RCA's comes to $28..

Last time I built a "Statement" pre, I came to wish I'd built the thing with zippers instead of screws and such because it got revised about a jillion times and never really finished for good. It used tubes and I just got tired of fooling with it and recently went to ICs.

That's why I put my prototype in a lunch box so I can flip the lid easily, my modded 640P's are still without their covers because I am always trying different parts.
 
Well, i dont plan on modding out the CNC Pre too much if at all... and the box i wanna make will in theory be such that the pcb is quickly and easily removed... so....

I'm contemplating what to use for an enclosure as well. I have three questions:

1) Is there a reason NOT to put the batteries in the same case as the PCB? Would there be noise or heat issues? If I could stuff it all into one, that would be great.

2) Say I wanted to mount the PCB but I need to make a mounting plate that it will fit onto (the enclosure I have in mind has mounting holes but they are bigger than the size of the PCB). Are there materials to stay away from? (e.g. aluminum or plastic). Anybody have an idea of what I could use, ~ 5" x 5" for the plate (and source to purchase from)? If I could get away with aluminum, or another soft metal, I'd prefer that.

3) Does the BOM include the grounding terminal screw? If not, can someone tip me off where I can purchase one?

1. Batteries are fine in the case, I have them in my prototypes case.

2. If you can find those plastic stand offs they would be ideal, otherwise you can buy cases that have slots in them that the PCB's just slide into. I have seen them at Frys.

3. No ground terminal screw in the BOM, you just need to find a knurled nut if you can, check the hardware stores, other wise a bolt with a hexagon nut and spring washer will work.

OK, so I need to find either a small sheet of aluminum, or plastic, that would be easy to cut to size, to create a mounting plate that would attach to my box, to which I would use risers and attache the PCB to. Does anyone know of a source?
