Another X-202-B In The House!!

Thanks Lunch. It's a labor of love for sure. But it might be a couple of months before I put it into regular duty. I have to think about a case. I have cats, and grown kids but they can be worse than little ones. :yes: Right now, after blowing that resistor, I have it running a small RS tuner just to make sure I see no more smoke. I think it's fine but I want to put it through its paces before it goes upstairs.

The next thing on the horizon is the FM-200-B I have sitting next to it. Nice duo I think :yes:

Just think, after finding a couple of faux pas, I went through the whole thing with a fine tooth comb looking for evidence of changes made by Clippy. I didn't think to check the fuse. Good thing fo sure!!

I've had it playing for a couple of hours now. Boy is it sweetening up :thmbsp: At first, it was kinda harsh. I thought it was reception since I have it playing a small Rat Shack tuner. My brain tuned it out while I cleaned up the shop. Then I heard Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight. Man, this thing is for real! And every tube is a JJ.

Happy as a clam :D
 
After smoking that resistor in post #59, I took a little break, put in an order for a few parts, and returned to hopefully finish things off.

I decided to flip the 1.5K resistor's placement with its partner in order to give it a bit more breathing room; also upped the wattage from 4w to 7w to provide a bit more of a safety margin. Likewise, I changed the 15ohm resistor @C-53 increasing the wattage from 7 to 10+. Finally, I installed a CL-80 in the line as a precaution against switch arcing.

It's all closed up and I'll soon be ready to tackle some cosmetic stuff.

All Done!!!

With the unit on its feet, I did final (for now) DC Balance and channel Bias adjustments, cleaned up the faceplate and deck, and replaced the missing jewels. Now, to be perfectly honest, these aren't the custom tooled at great expense, glueless, extremely limited in quantity, items (that can be fusslessly installed, with no, I repeat NO nonsense.) Rather, these are the alternative to those available at auction that can be had at Mouser for pennies. Call me cheap, I guess :thmbsp:

So, except for a case, this piece is done!

Now onto the tuner.....

Very, very nice!

Per previous discussions I've had with folks on the Fisher forum, just be aware that your jewels are not installed in the order in which Fisher installed them, which would require the right two most jewels to be reversed.

Frankly, yours are installed the same way they are on my X-202B, and make more sense that way to me, but Fisher (for some reason) thought differently. Just a point of information, that's all.

Very nice job of making yours be all it can be again, compared to what you received! It's amazing how less than appropriate "repairs" not only take away from the proper operation of the unit, but for owners who really care, never let the piece return to what it used to represent, either. Well executed repairs maintain both proper operation, and the class that the unit represents.

Thanks Dave. You, Don, Larry, and certainly others make this forum a very special place. Indeed, the same can be said about AK on the whole. For 25 bucks, it's a steal :yes:

Funny thing, when I got this piece, the owner said it had been shelved for a number of years because of "issues" that he never got around to address. He mentioned the "major" thing being the on/off switch. Digging into it, that detail turned out to be minor by comparison. Ten amp fuse?? Really?? Anyway, it was a real pleasure bringing this one back from the un-dead.

On the jewels, yes, I read the "jewel order" threads. I just couldn't wrap my head around the Fisher way. Maybe we simply haven't come across THAT service bulletin yet :D Still, this way just makes more sense. At least to me.

Thanks again. Now I'm off to Comic Con with my kid (which, frankly, I'm not looking forward to. Oh, to be a parent.) That tuner, however, awaits my return :yes:
 
need to more pics of volume control wiring fisher x 202b amp

Dear non digital, I appreciate it very much your posting the pics of the volume control wiring for the fisher x 202b . Can you kindly also show the pic of the back terminal side where the tow brown mica disc caps go like to know which terminals the are going on the loudness switch , on my x202 they are on the top two terminals of the three terminals switch. Also need a pic showing which terminals are the pair of 22k resistors and pair of 10k resistors are soldered to the main three terminals of the volume control. After looking carefully at your pics it appears the grounding wire from both channel A and B coming from the remote volume control plug at the back of the amp is going the bottom of the three terminals and that the bottom and the middle terminals are connected together is that right I am talking about the three main terminals on one side of the volume control the other side of the volume control has 2 additional terminals on each for each side A and B channels this is really a complicated volume control that I have seen on tube amp. As always your kind help is greatly appreciated! Sikander
