Another Yamaha R-900 Thread - Question

Hi all!

I have a Yamaha R-900 that is not working. When plugged in and turned on, it starts burning a resistor (or more) on the left channel right in front of the STK Module.

I am aware that the STK Modules are prone to failure and all of the issues that go with it. This unit uses the STK 1070II, which I’m planning to replace.

I’m curious if anyone knows what the resistors that need replaced are. I’ve attached a link to the schematic below. I don’t know how to read it.

My other question, though, is that the schematic says the unit uses a STK 3076 power module, but my amp has a STK 310S (I think it’s an S, photo attached.)

Is mine wrong? Is it causing a problem? Did maybe someone already replace it with something compatible or maybe not?

Any help anyone can offer is much appreciated.

That service manual is so poorly scanned I can't tell what the resistor designation on the circuit board layout is. You may have to follow the traces on the bottom and see what is connected to what and figure it out that way.

You have the same circuit on the other side maybe you can figure it out that way. I see only two resistors standing above the board. compare the color bands and see what you get.

The question to ask is why did it burn up? If you can find it in the schematic you may get an idea of what could have caused it.

So is that a problem if the manual says it should be 3706? Why would mine be different? (Obviously, if someone else changed it, but I don’t -think- that is the case here.

Or maybe the manual is from a different build?

I don't think being the 3106 itself is a problem if it is working. I think it was a more recent or improved pack but can't remember where I read that. I was looking into things a few years ago with my r-900.

Good news (for me or anyone who cares)!

I found some salvaged STK modules online and put them in tonight and we are up-and-running!

Now I just have to figure out what speakers to pair it with…
