FM Connector Guide

I'm putting together a guide to identifying tuner/receiver antenna connectors and I'm having a tough time finding a photo that clearly shows a push-on or quick F receptacle.

It is the same as a screw-on F except it is smooth (not threaded) and the only connector that it will accept is the push-on F (also known as a quick-connect F). Some of the current Yamaha tuner and receivers have them and I THINK one of the Bose wave has it.

I need a good clear picture and I'm having a heck of time finding one (and I'm very good with Google and Google images) and I don't personally own a radio that has one.

If someone that has one could take a picture or two at an angle and maybe dead-on too or if you know of where one is on the Web it would be very much appreciated.

My E-mail is laked3@bellsouth.net if you would mind E-mailing it to me or you can attach it to a message in this thread if you prefer.

Thanks very much in advance or if you take the time to check!

I'm attaching a picture of a PAL female antenna receptacle so you'll have an idea of what I'm generally talking about. Though it isn't hooked up to a radio, it gives a great look at what a PAL jack looks like.

In all my life I've never seen a smooth push-on F receptacle, only the plug.

"Female connectors have a 3/8-32 UNEF thread (9.525mm diameter). Most male connectors have a matching threaded connecting ring, though push-on versions are also available."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F_connector

What some of the Yamaha tuners have is a PAL TV jack. An adaptor (female F to male PAL) to allow connection of a male F connector is available at Radio Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103468

I haven't seen one either but they are there and I do have pictures of a couple of them, just not clear pictures.

There are smooth F receptacles on some newer Yamaha and Pioneer units, without a doubt. Hopefully, someone will provide a clear picture of it.

The PAL receptacles are something different, they do look very much alike, but obviously they are different.

Thanks for your input!

I think my Yamaha RX-V690 has the antenna connector your talking about. I also have the adaptor dongle that came with it.

I'm really a crappy photographer but I will take some pics when I get home tonight and send them your way.

Hi,

I looked in Google images, and I agree with you, I believe you have the connector I am seeking.

If you can get a picture, I would appreciate it. Get it as close as you can and it not be blurred. I can handle any editing and cropping or what-have-you if you don't want to or whatever.

Thanks again!

All of my Tandberg 3000-series and 4000-series tuners have that PAL jack, and the European version of the later 2000-series receivers has a plastic recessed version.

I have pics of all of that stuff in my archives, will dig some out this weekend if nobody has posted something already.

I uploaded the pictures I took to an online folder and sent the link to it to your email.

You may want to consider removing your email address from your post just in case
someone stumbles across it while googling weird antenna connectors.:scratch2:

Warning: Long, overly-detailed message

Thinking out loud here about the push on F receptacle and following up on the post by jdurbin1. I am becoming skeptical that they exist.

The PAL Female adapter is very close to the push on F adapter and the Push On F adapter will work on a PAL Jack but I doubt the center pin makes good contact with the receptacle "tube" in the middle of the connector.

I cannot find a manufacturer for bulkhead, panel mount, receptacle, jack or any other search term for push on f or quick f but I can find TONS for any other type of connector we know exists. I'm talking about the part that solders to the tuner or receiver.

There are some serious FM enthusiasts on the Yahoo FM Tuners group that are quite certain that some of the older Yamaha units use the Push on F. They even have a couple of different documents that indicate as much in their files section there.

I'm going to Best Buy shortly and taking my adapters and a camera to see what I can come up with. I'll run to Fry's if I can't find what I need at BB.

I've been researching the push on F receptacle for 3 days and the above is what I know right now.

I have a JVC shelf unit that I remembered was in a box and was pretty sure had a push-on F receptacle. Pulled it out this morning and no, it is a PAL almost certainly. The PAL adapter fits perfectly on it while the Push on F adapter COULD go on it but would be extra tight.

I am attaching a picture of the very common push on F adapter that is creating confusion because it spreads so easily that it would fit a PAL receptacle easily but not make a fit on the center tube. I suspect this adapter is why many think their tuner or receiver has a push on F receptacle.

RiojaRed was kind enough to send pictures of what he thought is (and may be) a push on F receptacle and he was smart enough to include a short adapter cable that I would guess the manufacturer included and the plug on that cable doesn't look like any push on F I've ever seen as it has a tube in the center rather than the common pin almost all Push On F plugs have.

If anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks,
Lake

Humm.... I may need to clear this up. Maybe I didn't read the original post well enough.

I don't know what the antenna connector on my Yamaha receiver is called. I have never seen one used on anything other than a Yamaha. Please understand I am not trying to cause a dispute. They may very well have been used on lots of equipment, but that is the only thing I have ever seen it on.

I can tell you it is not an F, PAL or RF connector. The closest thing it resembles is maybe a "reverse PAL"?

If you look closely the pin is in the socket and the tube is in the male connector. Just the opposite of the Billing-Lee, IEC 169-2, PAL (thank you Wikipedia) connector.

You cannot stuff an F connector on it without bending the center conductor and probably shorting it to the shield.

I have seen PAL connectors used on automotive head units on Land Rover, Volkswagen and Ford I think.

I admit that I refer to it as something "like an F connector" because I gave up on trying to educate the folks at R-Shack years ago and I finely got tired of being looked at like I had 3 eyes so now if I need a relay I ask for a switch, if I need an audio connector I ask for speaker wire and if I want an antenna connector I ask for a cable TV connector. That usually gets me in the area of the store then I say something to piss them off so they go away and leave me alone while I look for stuff they don't have.:D

Anyway.... Not trying to "educate" anyone or dispute anything. I just wanted to let you know what is on my RX-V690 Yamaha. Just for fun my RX-V2400 uses a standard F coaxial connector.

Rioja

Well, I've never seen a push-on F jack but that in itself doesn't mean much.

On the topic of people shoving the wrong plugs onto things, I have received tuners with PAL jacks that had a female RCA jack being used for the antenna cable end. The RCA jack socket fits over the PAL center connector and the shield fit inside the PAL shield. It wasn't a forcefit, slipped right on. However, I wouldn't have wanted to rely on the ground connection - there was a small but visible gap.

I'll get those pics this weekend and include a few different adapters I have laying around but here's a shot of the PAL jack on the rear of a 3001 tuner.

Everyone's input on this is much appreciated and any information is valuable.

Right now, I believe the fact that I can't located any manufacturers of the pushon F receptacle is very telling.

The guide will be available free online and I'll put a link to it in the links sticky at the top of this section when it is complete.

Didn't get to go to Best Buy or Fry's yet but anything I find out, I will be happy to share.

Thanks again, guys! I love the FM reception hobby!

go to Radio shack They have it

the adaptor pushes on to the antenna inputs & your cable connector screws to it

The only tuners I can say with certainty that have push on F connectors are Yamaha TX2000/1000's. They actually have two of them with A/B switching via a diode matrix. I don't currently have one in the shop, so can't take a picture of it. Other Yamaha's of the same vintage may have the same push on F connector. Earlier Yamaha's used PAL and later ones used Standard F.

Would like to give a preliminary and general summary of FM antenna connectors for FM tuners or receivers that will be true for 99%+ of people with standard domestic US units.

If you have 2 screws or spring clips you need a 300 ohm transformer. However, if the screws are marked 75 ohms just skin the coax and use the center conductor on one and the braid on the other.

If you have a threaded jack you need the "standard" F connector that is used on the majority of current FM receiver/tuners and TV sets for antenna connection. You may opt to use a push on or quick F connector if you like.

If you have a smooth connector you probably need a female PAL to F female to adapt it to standard coax.

There are exceptions but they are relatively rare and discussed here and there. For instance Yamaha had 4 units, T-85, TX-900, TX-1000, and TX-2000, several years ago (that are still popular) that apparently require push on F connectors. Yamaha T-70 and T-80 units required PAL male adapters.

I'm going to put together a guide with pictures over the next couple of days but wanted to share my current findings for those interested.

Any additional input or challenges are welcome. I will look into it.

Thanks again for the help so far!

Hi Mike,

That is what I thought we would eventually find. I have pictures of the connectors on both the TX-1000 and TX-2000 and they are PAL as well it appears, I mean they look EXACTLY like the other pictures of PAL receptacles.

I have read the manuals on those 4 Yamahas and there was either a push on F to 300 ohm transformer (those little black rectangular boxes) suppled or it was actually a PAL to 300 ohm transformer and everyone just thought it was the push on F because it looked like it. I suspect they just used the Push on F to 300 ohm transformer because at the time these units came out they were very common and available everywhere because of everything in television converting to F connector. This is all theory though as I don't have access to any of the suspect units.

There are 2 documents in the files section on the Yahoo Tuners groups discussing how those Yamahas require push on F connectors but I suspect right now we have had a mis-identification.

If what I suspect is true, and again I don't know as it is based on pictures and now what you said in your post above, it actually makes connector identification simple for most people and if anyone buys a brand new stereo or tuner it is simple now.

Any new system with an antenna input either requires an F connector if the jack is threaded, a female PAL (Belling Lee) if the jack is smooth or the 300 ohm transformer if the FM input is 2 screws or 2 spring clips.

I have a picture of a Yamaha T-80 and it does appear to require a male PAL so it is an exception but it is also a 30 plus year old tuner.

This research has opened my eyes and simplified connectors for me tremendously. It is a major part of my business and something I need to know.

If someone could test the other 3 Yamaha tuners and confirm the connectors, it would be a great help. I truly suspect they will find that the PAL female adapter fits perfect and the F connector is tight and that the center pin would not make a good connection in that tube receptacle because it is too large.

Thanks again, Mike, for your input, it is greatly appreciated!
