any akg 240 sextett fans here(with quick impressions)?

wonder if i'm the only follower of these super fine headphones? i had my pair for close to 2 weeks. i got it from original owner for 15 bucks. he told me he only used it once through the 20+ years he had them and been sitting in box ever since. i have the LP version with the white passive radiators.

i think they are unbelievable in sound and very natural in response and transparent. if recording is bad it will show it.they are not forgiving. sound stage is very open and airy if it's present in the recording. it blends so well with everything. i heard from people(from reading around) these are treble light and tiny but i seriously think not. they can be very bright indeed and can tell if the producer boosted the treble. bass might seem on the light side of things when it comes to impact but they extend pretty low and more then adequate for my taste. i also find the clarity and detail really impressive as well. but the midrange is the best things about these. guitars,piano,violins,female voices is simply breath-taking

i gotten them in perfect condition so my experience will vary i guess cause i heard every sextett can sound different depending on age.

i have the newer akg 240 studios as well and basically.....i gave them to my brother. i don't know what AKG did but their vintage k240 gear is sooo much better when it comes accurate sound reproduction. i hope these last me forever like the original owner cause i'm never letting these go.

i want pair of DF's as badly but i can not find any and i lost the last bid(some guy decided to bid over me the last 15 seconds and i couldn't out bid him in time).

The AKG Sextets are very nice sounding, very close to the AKG K340 in overall presentation. What color are the surrounding diaphragms in your unit.
 
they are white which i assume indicate i have the late production version. i read middle production is white with orange surroundings and early production is orange all around. mines all white. mine also has the replaced handband akg did later on instead of the headband with the holes in them like the middle and early productions.

from reading grado is more bright,aggressive and forward right? i never used grado but i think mine don't sound aggressive,forward or bright unless it was intended in the recordings presentation. it can be very open or laidback on lot of jazz,ambient,acoustic music but i agree the midrange is where it's at with these. that's what i love most and i really like the soundstage especially listening to some bjork. some her tracks sound almost like i'm listening to a binaural recording.
 
I've owned a set since the mid-90's sometime. The best for me so far. These are 'studio monitors' according to the original box. Not sure if that means anything, but 'monitor' is on the left side label. and have felt-like covers instead of the perforated style in your pic. I could not believe the stereo separation these things pull out. Cd's I had been listening to for years suddenly had new instruments in the background. Also the only set I haven't managed to shred yet ;)

Are they gold? i think if it says monitor on the side you have the newer known akg monitors(600ohm). from what i read they were suppose to replace the sextett models of the 70's and still use the same 6 passive radiator design. lot of people like them more cause they have more bass ''presence'' compared to the late production Sextett(i have). yea i have to agree on the stereo separation. i realized it when i first put them on. on how clear and clean each instrument was separated and the stereo image was much wider and life-like compared to the newer model 240's(55ohm studio's) i have. everything is just done better.

the term ''studio monitors'' meant the headphone is meant to be voiced completely flat in the frequency range. i think only pair nowadays that still made like that is beyerdynamic studio series(they been making same product for over 30 years) and sony V6's. also the newer akg k701's. thing tho you hear lot of complaints with a ''flat'' headphone being ''Bright'' that's cause they don't have a treble roll off like they're suppose to due to ''human hearing'' cause speakers are close to the ears.

Yes, gold trim and solid band with gold logo. Right after I posted that, I read up on the link someone posted...probably should have done that first. I remember shortly after buying them I saw a picture of Stevie Ray Vaughan wearing a set in studio while recording and thought they might be worthwhile after all :D
 
i like my sextetts so much i bought another pair. this time in original box.

i paid more as well cause it was a bidding fest last second. won these for 72 bucks compared to my other which i bought for 15 bucks but was so worth the 72 i spent. these ones tho were already reconditioned as well. seller took them out of the box and replace the foam and re-soldered some joints before putting them up for sell. they are the late productions(white passive radiators) as well but use the original headband.

great guitarist. self-taught if i believe and plays by ear(what i do). yea the monitors are well known. they use something similar to the six passive membranes like the sextetts but are vents instead. i love the idea behind the vintage akg models with the 6 passive radiators cause it helps big time with low frequency resonance. you don't hear that annoying resonance from low frequencies when testing low frequency sweeps.

lot consider the sextetts better to other akg models(besides the DF's) and like the monitors as much or better to some. i really like both my sextetts. crazy details(not fake details from boosted treble) and soundstage is so 3- dimensional. if it didn't suffer from inside your head center imagery(like all headphones) i swear i think i left my speakers on and i have my room under acoustic control(almost 100%.need to make some bass traps).

i don't understand why akg never continued on making the headphones with the 6 passive design. i know cause of cost cutting but at what cost? i think they would have no problem selling these designs today since they are superior acoustically. all best akg designs are now discontinued...well not entirely cause they do special orders for the monitors and DF's for studios and radio broadcasting.
 
Still have my K240 setetts...bought them back in the day. Still have the orange and brown box they came in. They sound great. These have the white radiators and the holes in the headband....very nice indeed.

I saw this post but wasn't aware of how liked this model seems to be.
 
yea. another model that is rarely known but one AKG's best is the akg 240DF's. one of the most accurate headphones i ever tried and own(thanks to a head-fier i bought it from).

lot of AKG discontinued headphones(k340,k500,k501,k240 sextetts,k240DF,k1000) are much better compared to what they put out nowadays. people swear by the 701/702's but i personally didn't like them much compared to my k240DF's. thing about i like as well even tho my sextett LP and DF can sound very bright with some recordings they are not ear piercing or fatiguing like lot headphones.

i just also love the clarity across the spectrum on my DF's. they make every little detail easy to track and pick up. i just don't understand why AKG gave into marketing nowadays. they made some of the greatest headphones. even tho the monitors are still available nowadays they aren't made the same way like they're use to(actually there is like 3 versions of the akg 240 monitors.)
 
I've just bought my LP Sextetts, and my initial impressions are very good. The reason I bought these is I'm moving into the college dorms in september.

I was originally looking at the new k242 HD's, but after coming across a few threads like this I changed my mind, and also noticed there was a nice pair for sale here in Hungary. The surprising (Or is it?) thing is that their sound is similair to my Philips MFB speakers: very balanced, midrange oriented, with slightly rolled off non-fatigueing treble.:music:

Currently I'm driving it with my Kenwood Basic C2 preamp, and my laptop's internal soundcard as a source. (both my proper soundcard and my DAC gave in within 2 days last week :tears:)

Right now I'm looking into replacing the worn parts and also looking for an affordable option for a headphone amp.
 
congrats on the find. is it just the elastics that are little worn and seem loose? if that's just the issue it can be very easy to fix and adjust. you don't even have to take the headphone apart to adjust the elastics. if the pads are in good condition i suggest keep them and use them. they might be little flat but simple toilet paper/paper towel/foam mod can get those pads full once again and in my opinion they are much better than the new pleather pads that is used for the k240 studio and k240 mkII. they feel much more soft and comfortable as well.
