Fried model R fans??

i was out on fathers day cleaning out one of my gear stash's and figured since its fathers day the wife would go easy on me bringing home a few pairs I hadent listened to for a couple yrs....
Fried model R's are up next after the big Braun monitors.Any fans here of the Frieds??

I think I know there is at least one other AKer that owns a pair. I'd like to hear a set of Frieds, I know the Model Rs are nice speakers. Bud apparently designed them with an inherent bass hump to make them more exciting.

I'm sure our resident Fried nut and expert, sm19422 will chime in.
 
Cool,Im going to try them on the tube amps tomorrow as I haven't listened to them for some time.
ive got a somewhat distant cousin of these the IMF als 40iia in my bedroom system pushed by Dynaco mkiv mono blocks amps and their dynamite speakers,not sure if the transmission line technology is the same with the two speakers tho
 
I don't think the Fried Rs are transmission lines, I believe those are bass reflex.

The ALS40IIs aren't a transmission line either, but an interesting take on one. Instead of having a huge box and line they shortened the line and stuck a bass driver on the end. I'd like to hear a pair of these some time soon, even the non-transmission line IMF speakers have really nice bass (the IMF Super Compact for example) so I'm sure the ALS40II sounds quite nice. I have a pair that are just cabinets, no drivers, and hope one day to find the spare bass drivers to fit in there and the proper crossovers, but that'll be a project for next year I think.

Either way, I'm sure that the Fried Rs and the ALS40IIs rock the house :thmbsp:
 
yes the ImF als 40iia's are great with the dynaco's,very dynamic and excellent bass.I remember the model r's being not quite as acurateside but it was a long while ago since I ran them with various SS amps
 
The Fried model R's are a very nice speaker. They use KEF drivers and have the Fried "Line Tunnel" cabinet. I sold them in the late 1970's and grew quite fond of them.

hey guy,did you ever have the occasion to try them on tubes?I don't think they very effiecent reminded me of my old AR speakers needing power.
My fishers run in triode around 30 -35wpc,hopefully they will wake up with that

Many years ago I knew a fella with a pair, a young engineer who worked for my Father. He drove them with a Dyna PAT-5 and ST-400. Excellent sound.

I was very keen on the Model H.

had some time this morning so took out the IMF als-40iia's and put the Fried model r's into my bedroom system.Driveing them with a pair of dynaco mkiv mono amps..... very respectable sound.
Id say the bass response is a tad better than the als40's but the hi's and mids a bit lacking in comparison.
The bigger cabinet does even things out in my opinion with a bigger soundstage happening.They also sound better then I remember on the tube blocks as compared to solid state

I have a pair...took me a while to see this thread so sorry for the delay. Mine are original model R's, which ones are yours? Spectacular speakers, the only real criticism that I have is on their power handling and the racetrack woofer's occasional bottoming out at moderate volumes. I think that 20-30wpc is tough, my tube amp probably wouldn't have massive success driving it, mine is a 4 x 6L6 based baldwin.
 
How many of the Fried Model R fans have heard the later R models?

Wow the later model looks radically different I was not expecting that I had assumed only crossover changes.

I meant on Mortsnets's early Model R's that resemble mine. In the speaker on the right it looks to me like the slot doesn't have any foam in it; on mine it's readily apparent. Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong?

The original owner assured me they always were like that with no foam. And they sound good so I have no reason to doubt him. I've heard that Bud went through many revisions, this one was, I think the Model R IIi (i for improved).
