Any Fried model R fans??

I don't think it is a big deal if you didn't know.
It sounds like you have stuff that people would want - the preamp certainly is intriguing. You may have to be a subscriber (25 bucks, I think) to post there, but I suspect that if you are trying to find new homes for the stuff rather than grab every penny you can, it would be well worth it - someone will gladly reimburse you.

That's the first thing i thought.

I wonder how it would sound with a LS3/5A crossover and the special felt around the tweeter (for controlling diffraction). A bass-extended LS3/5A should sound magnificent...

i wouldn't try the LS3/5a xover, but I put 3/8" rubber door seal circling the outer edge of the tweeter plate. on the 12" slightly angled back stands, they sound great but then the plastic stolen milk crates that I angled back as well sounded JUST FINE but were cosmetically oh so much better. they are welded steel and white. using my audioresearch SP3a1 preamp and ADCOM 555II 200wpc amp, they make VERY nice music, and they image like a mofo.

Mine do have the wool piece between the tweeter and mid. Meant to upload a picture with my previous post

Mine don't have the felt and never did. but I surrounded the tweeter's plate with 3/8" rubber door insulation, as mentioned above.

Good afternoon too all ... Just dug out my R/5s from hibernation, I had purchased them on the cheap out of curiosity. I've enjoyed A3s about a decade ago and have an attraction to the tunnel design, re, DCM TF 700s, TDLs, (exact model escapes me) ,and a couple of homebrews.

Im looking for any info regarding these ... I'm guessing the least desirable ones they are..but they sound so good. Serial#s 1001 & 1002.

I read-through the Stereophile review of the R/4s, originally from '92, the one flaw that stood out was the lower highs/upper mids had iregularities at certain times/levels/material. The R/5s had the tweeter placed between the mid and woofer as opposed to being on top....i wonder if this was an attempt to defeat that?
I guess we may never know....

Having owned the RIIs for decades, I also made it my business to hear subsequent models. None have measured up to the IIs in overall sound. I was disappointed as I have been privy to IMF RSPMs and was blown away by Model Qs and bemoan the fact that I didn't buy a pair. I still own the RIIs am am never let down by their sound. As my electronics improved, so did the sound of the RIIs.

After a few modern speakers came through my place, I began to long for a bit more high frequency presence and air in my Fried Model RII (with the improved tweeter mod). So I upgraded select Solen caps I had used earlier to Mundorf Evo oil and definitely got some improvements but still not exactly prefect to my liking. So I changed the 2.2uf that's parallel to the 3.3 ohm resistor to 3.3uf. Never thought I'd be the type to cap roll but I'm very glad I did! I think Fried's design was a bit too laid back for my ears and the change to 3.3uf raised the tweeter output just enough to keep the character/balance and give me that touch more I wanted.

I didn't know about any improved tweeter mod, where did you find that? If you could provide a link to it, that would be nice. I have sometimes felt that the top of the T27 in the RII was slightly compressed on top to a sort of silvery sound rather than a crystal one. I was never conscious of that effect when i owned the Rogers LS3/5a so i am not sure its a limitation of the T27 or its implementation in the RII.

Here it is.

Fried was known to prefer a laid back high end in his designs - I prefer it a bit forward. I've owned other speakers with the T27 that I really enjoyed. Now that I've modified the modified circuit, I'm be happy for a very long time to come.
