Any Fried model R fans??

re-the felt strip, mine never had that but I circled the tweeter with 3/8" rubber insulating foam. i feel that it sounds a bit smoother this way with no grill (never used them and the cloth just deteriorated. i still keep the frames in case I ever decide to use a grill when not listening.

i still believe that they outperform current speakers of the same price range, especially in terms of transients.
 
There are some things that make me wonder about the Rs in sildani's post. Most obviously, the fact that it appears to have a SEAS tweeter and woofer, rather than the KEFs usually found. But that may be because the label says they are made in England - I thought the Rs were made in America after IMF and Fried parted ways, and even if there was a transition period, the different drivers are a surprise. And then the lack of the foam in the line tunnel - it is true that Fried suggested that people experiment to find what sounded best, removing it completely makes the speaker a fairly unloaded bass reflex, which might sound odd and might affect power handling.
Of course, if the price is right, all my qualms become positive reasons to buy the thing, just to find out what is going on. And why that Fried Signature badge is on it.
 
apparently, the R with the obviously non-KEF drivers was Bud's effort before he and John Wright parted company. i have the American RIIs with KEF T27, B110, and B139 oval with foam in the port. that makes it tight like my Dynaco A25s were.
 
if you have the money and space, I say go for it and report back how they sound. Not sure but it looks like the foam that should go in the lower cut out is missing. Might be something you can use to negotiate with. I am pretty sure you can find the same foam at a fabric store.

Series 1 was the original with the modified KEF crossover and KEF speakers. Series two replaced the KEF crossover with Bud Fried own crossover. Series 3 was made in England with I believe Dalesford drivers. Providing the drivers are in good condition a great buy. Unlike the KEF drivers the Dalesford are unavailable.
 
i intently listened to RIIIs and they weren't cut from the same cloth as the RIIs which I think had a lot to do with the Dalesford drivers. the KEF drivers are obviously superior in every way.
 
glad to be of assistance. i have listened to IMF Monitor III improved and and the American version of the same ...RSPMs with integral stand, all with the same drivers since the mid 70s and the RIIs and Model H sub/sat system at a friend's house who owned them all. the big IMFs were flat to 16Hz, as was the H.

i wish I had gotten my hands-on theModel Q, a wonderful medium sized stand mount. it imaged right in there with the biggies, and Rs. the H was without peer. sitting off axis of their L/R monitors was as if you sat to one side of the musicians playing. the subwoofer to the H weighed 150# !
 
Fried did not use Dalesford drivers in any of the R models.
The B2 used the 5 inch.
The C used the 6.5 inch.
The T and O1 used the 10 inch in sub transmission lines.
The D used the 10 inch in a aperiodic sub enclosure.
The SM used the 12 inch in a sub transmission line.
 
Malcolm and John Sugden of Sugden amps founded the Dalesford speaker company.
The tool and dies were brought to the US and some divers were made here around 1982.
The Cambridge Dalesford operation ceased around 1984.
IIRC this was done under the ownership of Mission speakers.

Since there is so much debate over the Dalesford woofers I will post some photos.
The photo on the RIGHT shows the Fried OEM Dalesford D153/80 model on the right side.
The motor structure is 38mm in length.

The driver on the left is the Fried C6 dual voice coil double stacked magnet OEM Gefco, Kevlar Carbon fiber pulp paper composite cones.

The first photo on the left side shows the stock Dalesford D153/50.
The motor structure is 28mm in length.

I am not sure what drivers were used in the R3 model.
Fried didn't have these at his business location in Philadelphia around 1980.
He was having a FIRE SALE on the old Kef drivers due to people damaging the Kef B139's by bottoming out the voice coils.

I was in contact with Jerry Bloomfield owner of Falcon Acoustics back in 2011 and Wilmslow Audio
According to Mike Taylor of Wilmslow Audio Dalesford was under contract and made some of the Kef Bextrene cone drivers.

Fried moved his business to Norristown, PA which is located in my county.
I had the opportunity to buy into Fried Products but declined.
 
Just found this post (and i am a brand new user)

My (recently passed) brother had a pair of Fired 'R's in decent mechanical shape... but probably need 'some' work (my niece has them locally near valley forge PA)

I'm looking for a good home.. they are likely project, but an achievable one...

we're just looking to 'give them away' - literally rather than throw them in the dumpster.

no scam just hate to see something useful go to waste.

ya my brother and i were into the hifi thing in the 70's and 80's together... we have some other gear in the 'project' category as well like a couple of amber 70 amps... i think the chips just failed... caps aren't leaking or anything...

a music reference pre-amp that needs to be retubed...

stuff needs to find homes
