Any Fried model R fans??

Fun thread guys! I have R I’s and love them. Can’t imagine what what the II’s sound like.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, you can only tell whether it is a series 1 or 2 by looking at the crossover. Bud Fried offered series 1 customers the chance to up-grade to series 2 by purchasing the new crossovers. I assume most customers would have taken up his offer. What are your serial numbers?

Mine are 7228 and 9. Checked the crossovers and they definitely do not look like the RII’s. Still love them!

If they are series 1 or 2 they should both have the same serial number. Mine are 07225R & 07225L. Do your speaker have a flat oval woofer or a round one?

Just checked and the 9 is actually an 8 7228r and 7228L. I have the racetrack oval woofers.

These look like mine, which proved to be series II. @Robint and why would you suggest these are modified Concerto crossovers?

My mistake, my circuit board is green and the blue threw me. Yes they are series ll. Maybe I was hoping finally to see a series l crossover.

Just curious, does anyone else have this foam ring around your tweeter? Checking pictures on the web and don’t seem to see any others like this.

No, but I put a square of wool around the tweeter. Used on the BBC LS3/5a speakers.

No not on mine. I've researched these speakers extensively and haven't seen or read about foam around the tweeter before- but foam around a tweeter isn't unheard of but usually part of the engineering. I wouldn't be putting anything around my tweeter that wasn't a part of the original design.

Thanks, they came to me that way so assumed they were original to the speakers.

I have had the R’s for years and not until this week did I bother to look at what other R’s looked like. I may take them off and see if I can hear any difference.

Correction, when I got my pair of R's there was a strip of wool between the tweeter and the mid. I just replaced the strip with new. Went online to look at R's and one of the pictures from Canuck Audio Mart showed the strip between the tweeter and the mid. Maybe in later production the put the foam ring on.

Mine has the wool between the tweeter and mid too. I will check the difference between foam/no foam, and report back.

Had a chance to listen to the R’s without the foam rings. I have to say the highs seem to be more clear. They always have sounded great to me but without the rings the highs just seem to fit a little better with the mids and lows. I am guessing there is plenty of wanting it to sound better bias going on!

I would think with the serial numbers of mine that this is not a late change but more likely someone trying to tune their speakers.

Likely. That foam was awfully snug to that tweeter, usually foam is implemented further from the dome. I once had a pair of very, very early PSB speakers that had a foam pad flush with the tweeter housing. Hard to imagine the impact it might have have but there it was, definitely looked very cool!

Hi all, resurrecting this thread. There’s a pair of Model Rs nearby for $200, seller claims they work well. I’ve read through most of the thread and was wondering which series they might be and if they were worth the asking price. Thanks all.
