One person has all those speakers? See if you can come by with your Marantz & audition a pair or two. Probably would help a lot with your decision.

Lots of them are worth a listen; I've bolded ones that I'd give a serious thought to. Those Ohm L's are pretty nice and maybe the most under-priced, I've seen them go for twice that. The JBL l40s are nice too, but they're a full sized speaker, not a true bookshelf. If you have a bigger room, I'd look at those hard too.

I would run over there for the JBL L40's - provided the foam surrounds are still good on the woofers. The HPM-40 is worthwhile as well. Both of them should be a nice match to the Marantz....(maybe I'm just partial to JBLs.. :) - the HPM series have the JBL L100 engineer's heritage)

I have a pair of L40s that I ran with a 45wpc Pioneer (SX780) for many years. VERY HAPPY with them! I bought the speakers new in 1980 and still have them. I had to have the woofers refoamed, but they're all original otherwise. I'd give them a serious listen.

I own the L40's and the L100's.....Fantastic speakers. If the L40's foams' are shot, use that to negotiate a lower price and refoam them. If you don't feel up to it, pull them and I will refoam them for you...no charge for the labor. I will get the refoam kit from Rick Cobb...

I have Polk RTA 11 TL's, and they are FANTASTIC speakers. They are quite big, so fi you are looking for bookshelf, these aren't for you. The 200 is an OKAY asking price if they are in great condition. I got my TL's for 150. Good luck!

Thanks for the generous offer....I'll find out what they look like..

The Epi 70 speakers would also be worth the money and listening to. These are smaller bookshelf offerings. If the foam surround has not been replaced, offer half or maybe $20. Check to see if the badges are still present as well and the grill cloth is in good condition. A simple recap, maybe replace the binding posts, and you will have a very nice, small, two way acoustic suspension speaker system.

I asked what condition the JBL 40s and HPM40s are in, and here is the reply.

"The HPM 40's are in nearly new condition I am currently listening to them in my living room. I think they are highly underated because their big brother
(the 100's) get all the attention. The JBL 40's have nice walnut cabs and are in very good condition too, they are basic 10" two ways and have been reforamed."

Hmm, decisions, decisions....

I second the Polk 11T. You may also like the simple two way Dahlquist DQM-5 with your 2240B. I guess you can still get old stock parts for them if they needed it.

The Jensen Model 4's are nice, balanced speakers if they're in good shape. would probably need refoaming and a recap, but $50 isn't too bad. $35-$40 would be appropriate if they need much work.

These are some favorites of mine if ever I come across & can afford them!

The Ohm Ls are a fine speaker -- Ohm's attempt to make an Advent slayer -- smaller and more efficient but with the same low end. I think it was pretty successful. But I'm not sure they are worth 75 a pair since there are, in that list, and elsewhere, very good speakers for less.
But tastes are very idiosyncratic, so go listen -- we all can say one thing or another, but it's your ears that matter.

Third on the Polks but $200 is high. I mean, they're worth it sonically (excellent speakers, and they cost $1K when new) but they have poor resale value and often are available around $150 or less. I paid $60 for mine.

I 4thies the polks. Talk him down to $150.

Only other pair on there is the CS-88 but not for $75. For $50 or less, you'd be hard pressed to find a harder rocking speaker that can hit the low notes. I took a pair to work for the xbox 360 to play GH and RB.
